INTRODUCTION

The role has an August start date with training in July and opportunity to cover any available shifts prior to then if desired (but not essential).

We are looking for a personal assistant to support a disabled, queer, transgender man in his own calm and quiet home, that is much suited for the queen of his castle - Sheila the cat.

He self-directs his care and lives as independently as possible. He is a musician and poet, and works on personal projects when well enough. He enjoys listening to audiobooks and podcasts and spending time with his friends, discussing his many interests.

Have you ever worked for someone with experience in queer and disabled activism? What about someone who goes to sleep with a pile of poetry books? Here is your chance A major role of any PA will be to support his independence, as this is something very important to him.

Being a personal assistant is slightly different to being a carer as it centres autonomy, choice and control in all aspects of daily life.

The right PA will not only understand this, but make a real difference to the quality and stability of his health.

JOB ROLE

The employer would like a PA who can take direction well and has a friendly, calm demeanour as his neurodiversity, pain, and mental health difficulties (including anxiety), affect his communication and sensory processing.

ABOUT YOU

  • You are able to provide physical, mental and cognitive support when needed
  • Able to look beyond a person's condition and see them as an individual, not just another client on the list
  • You can commit to wearing unscented products at work and be a nonsmoker (employer lives with chemical and sensory sensitivities and allergies).
  • Able to work in an environment that has reduced lighting (due to employer's aforementioned sensory sensitivities)
  • Willing to be flexible about tasks but also able to learn and follow routine

WHAT YOU WILL GAIN

  • Advancing neurodivergence inclusive communication skills
  • Learning preciseness and paying attention to detail
  • Advancing problemsolving skills
  • Feeling like a true team member as your voice will be heard and valued
  • Longer shifts mean that other days of the week are free for other responsibilities (great for students, freelancers)
  • Each day is varied
  • Gaining an array of professional/nursing skills such as catheter care, meeting dietary requirements and bespoke moving and handling
  • Working 11 will feel like making a real difference in comparison to short 11 time in many care agency/ care home/rehab facility arrangements.
  • LGBTQI+ positive employer
