About the team


At the heart of the organisation is the Private Office that supports the Chief Regulator, Deputy Chief Regulator and the Chair in their work.

Members of the Private Office team help maximise their effectiveness in everything Ofqual does to regulate on behalf of students and apprentices.

It's a busy team, with a unique 'bird's eye' view of Ofqual's work.


_ What will the post holder be doing?_
The Deputy Private Secretary will support the running of Private Office.

They will support the Private Secretary in making sure the time of the Deputy Chief Regulator and Chief Regulator is well used on the most important matters of the day by prioritising work and diary engagements, ensuring they are well briefed and representing them in work across the organisation, and externally too.

This role will have a particular focus on support for the Deputy Chief Regulator.

This is an exciting, challenging and varied role for a motivated, enthusiastic and self-starting individual.

The Deputy Private Secretary's day might include preparing a complex policy briefing, attending a meeting with Ministers or working with senior colleagues to drive forward internal projects.

It will be incredibly varied, fast-paced and always interesting.


You'll need a good eye for detail, strong organisational skills and you'll need to build great working relationships across the organisation to enable you to do your work.

You'll also need to be comfortable handling sensitive information.


This is an extremely rewarding role, and a unique career development opportunity - offering an insight into the role of the Deputy Chief Regulator and Chief Regulator and the workings of a high profile, national regulator.

Due to the nature of this role, the post is offered on a full-time basis only. Job shares covering full time hours are also invited to apply.

As the focus of this role is support for the Deputy Chief Regulator, the post holder is expected to attend the Ofqual office 3 days per week, to work alongside the Deputy Chief Regulator - with the potential for up to one of these 3 days in Ofqual's London office space, as required

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support the Private Secretary in managing the day to day flow of business through Private Office, prioritising tasks and ensuring completion and clearance within deadlines.
  • Work with PAs to ensure scheduling supports and aligns with the priorities of the Chief Regulator and Deputy Chief Regulator and Ofqual's strategic objectives
  • Coordinate accurate and timely briefings and advice, supporting preparedness for internal and external meetings and engagements, and enabling good quality, well informed decisions.
  • Draft good quality communications, papers and reports as required.
  • Support the Deputy Chief Regulator's internal and external meetings, preparing papers and agendas and recording and tracking actions.
  • Take forward actions on behalf of the Deputy Chief Regulator and monitor progress of work commissioned by the Deputy Chief Regulator.
  • Lead work under the direction of the Deputy Chief Regulator as required to support Ofqual's strategic objectives.
