About the role:

We are looking for a transformative Group Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing


The focus of this critical role will be to create a best-in-class safety function, transforming the organizational behaviours and drive clearer accountability across the National Grid group.

You will build the team and capabilities, particularly with regards wellbeing to support the business as we continue to manage through the Covid-19 crisis.


You will provide lean and effective Group safety and health governance and independent assurance, partnering with National Grid's Business Units and Functions in the development and implementation of these requirements.


This is a pivotal hire for National Grid to ensure we have a world-class approach to safety and is an exciting opportunity to deliver critical change on a global scale, working in a safety-first environment in a business at the forefront of the energy transition.

The role can be based in National Grid House, Warwick or Strand, London.

We operate a Hybrid Working approach with a mix of home and office working to suit the needs of the business and our employees, using technology to ensure we always feel connected.


Key Accountabilities:


As part of your remit you will:

  • Set the company policy and strategy for Safety, Health and Wellbeing to ensure our group performance is excellent; future focused, risk-based, relevant and reflective of internationally accepted good practice for all who work on our assets [30,000 employees + contractors]
  • Support the Group Executive and the Board in understanding, directing and promoting safety, process safety, health and wellbeing performance and culture across the Group. Provide assurance in relation to the Executive's respective responsibilities by the setting of performance metrics and assurance activities.
  • Be the critical friend to the business unit executive teams, building trust to both understand and effectively challenge what is and what isn't working to drive real improvements in safety and wellbeing culture, maturity and performance.
  • Work in partnership with the Business Units and Functions across the Group to ensure that each is implementing and complying with approved Group policies and strategies and providing consistent reporting on performance through being the owner of common data and systems
  • Participate and represent National Grid externally, and with peer organisations in the UK and US to identify and promote twoway exchange of good practice and to bring lessons learned to the benefit of the National Grid business, enhancing our reputation with senior stakeholders and investors.
  • Lead a highly motivated, innovative, and valuefocused team, developing talent and a performance management culture that drives value through employee engagement and successfully meets or exceeds all strategic objectives for the area.

About you:

In this case, we're looking for someone who:

  • Has the ability to lead and drive collective ownership of health, safety and wellbeing management within a FTSE top 20 business.
  • Can demonstrate experience of operating at senior level in advising and guiding the business on safety and health risk, aduit and compliance in support of business strategy and best practice.
  • Is highly skilled in communication, relationship management and negotiation. Is curious and can collaborate across the business and with key partners, stakeholders, process and functional leads.
  • Has understanding of the UK and US energy sector, regulatory issues affecting the industry and longterm internal / external influences.
  • Possesses good working
