Job Purpose

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project research strategy.
  • Conduct archival and policy research on the gambling industry between 1965 and 2025.
  • To organize and carry out oral history interviews related to gambling and professional sports sponsorship, ;
  • To develop, organize the Kicking the Habit project website, including a function for public donation of materials and management of these resources.
  • Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of Kicking the Habit team and that of Gambling Research Glasgow, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.
  • Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.
  • Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the _Kicking the Habit_ team group and the wider academic and policy communities.
  • Take a leading role in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and School research group activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College
  • Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the _Kicking the Habit_ team and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.
  • Make a leading contribution to Teaching activities (e.g. demonstrating etc) and associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with Principal Investigator.
  • Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.
  • Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.

Knowledge/ Qualifications

Essential
A1.Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) in contemporary history or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s)


Desirable
B1.In-depth knowledge in the history of public health, sport or addiction.
B2.Knowledge of oral history and policy analysis methods
B3.Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, normally including sufficient postdoctoral experience in a related field, appropriate to an early career researcher
B4.Knowledge of gambling policy and commercial gambling industry practices


Skills

Essential
C1.

Proven ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively as part of a research team, and proven ability to meet research deadlines.

C2. Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.


Experience

Essential:

E1.Experience of archival research, across a range of source material

E2.Evidence of contributions to written outputs, preferably peer-reviewed, as expected by the discipline in terms of types and volume of outputs.

E3.A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality journals/conferences
E4.Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities
E5.Experience in delivering and managing academic/public engagement events.
E6.Experience in undertaking independent research.
E7.Ability and willingness to travel to conduct archival research across the UK


Desirable:

F1.Knowledge of gambling policy and commercial gambling industry practices
F2.Experience of policy analysis methods
F3.Experience of website design and maintenance
F4.Experience of public engagement activities

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum.
The post is full time and fixed-term until 31 August 2030. It is available from 1 September 2024.
