Head of Employment Law (known internally as a Senior Principal Employment Lawyer) - Hybrid Working aligned to either Birmingham, Bristol, or London - Attractive salary plus up to 15% bonus.

What will the role involve as our Principal Lawyer?

  • The role holder will lead for BT legal on some of the most complex, sensitive and strategic employment matters across CFUs.
  • You will be responsible for the provision or procurement of advice for CFUs on complex employment matters for example HR transformation programmes, ExCo level exits and onboarding, significant M&A/deal projects and Reward programmes
  • Influence the strategic approach taken, including identifying issues of law, policy and governance of wider CFU/BT significance for employment
  • Manage, supervise and support junior lawyers on larger employment projects/cases, for example HR transformation programmes and/or Deals etc
  • Be responsible for upwards briefings on Employment matters to the LD Litigation, Employment & Pensions and CFU Stakeholders including Board and ExCo
  • Determine involvement of other stakeholders in Employment matters including corporate relations and investor relations
  • Manage the relationship with external lawyers on Employment matters, including costs budgets, to deliver costeffective solutions, including acting as relationship manager for one or more firms
  • Accountability for transformation of support on employment team transformation
  • Complete and maintain case records (including on new systems) and deal with reporting of their matters for central reporting on employment matters (including Exco and BARC)
  • Provides expert advice on highly complex legal issues within defined area of operation based on a combined understanding of BT's commercial strategy and in depth legal expertise and experience.

What are we looking for in our Principal Lawyer? You may have a variety of the below;

  • Proven track record of leading on M&A deals, significant TUPE deals, group wide people transformation programmes and supervising others working on these matters
  • Department management experience including managing external suppliers, stakeholders and budgets
  • Line management experience preferred.

  • You manage others to interpret and draft detailed and complex reports and documentation. You use your knowledge and industry practice to consolidate information for the business, and present in an accurate and concise way.

  • You persuade people by supporting ideas with logical arguments and data. You build support and join discussions to resolve issues and achieve the best outcome for the business.


  • Storytelling

  • You drive and role model the articulation of the most complex concepts and /or data using simple, compelling and coherent narratives. You deliver narratives to internal and external audiences at all levels consistently judging the demands of the situation.


  • Give specialised advice

  • You provide guidance and counsel on complex and unfamiliar situations, often involving risk and emotion.
