The Research Strategy & Services Division (RSSD) is the central research support function at the University of Birmingham, providing expert advice and guidance to our researchers, their partners, the University Executive Board, and Professional Services, across the following connected teams: Strategic Research Development; Research Support (Grants and Contracts); Business Engagement & Research Impact; Research Environment & Policy; Trusted Research, Systems and Data; Research Governance, Ethics & Integrity.

This makes the RSSD one of the most comprehensive research support functions in the sector

Role Summary


The role holder will provide Executive Assistant support to the Deputy Director of the Research Strategy & Services Division, Dr Steve Taylor, and to the Assistant Directors (RSSD) Craig Maskell and Xavier Rodde.

The role involves a large degree of support for HR matters, including recruitment, annual PDR and merit pay processes, and overseeing the RSSD New Starter Induction Programme.


Main Duties

  • On behalf of the Deputy Director, RSSD, compile reports, papers, briefings, and analyse management information for a range of internal and external audiences ensuring that the Deputy Director, Research Strategy & Services Division is well prepared when representing the senior team of the RSSD in key meetings with internal and external stakeholders ensuring that the RSSD and the University is excellently presented;
  • Liaise with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders including the executive teams of senior academics, research partners, funders, and collaborators, to support the Deputy Director (RSSD) and ADs (RSSD), in the delivery of the University's research ambitions;
  • Proactive preparation and collation of meeting related papers and the provision of highquality committee support where necessary, taking minutes and ensuring that any action points are followed up in a timely manner;
