This is a newly created post to support the implementation of the NHS Long Term plan for treating tobacco dependency within the Acute Trust.

The Treating Tobacco Dependence (TTD) Lead Advisor will be responsible for the development and implementation of the new Treating Tobacco Dependence Service and will implement Trust wide support for adult smokers to quit.

The TTD Lead advisor will lead and manage a small team of smoking cessation advisors.

They will be influential and dynamic in working on local and national agendas as part of the specialist nursing team within the Unscheduled Care Directorate.

To support implementation of the NHS Long Term Prevention Plan for Treating Tobacco Dependence within Secondary Care.

The post holder will be instrumental in supporting Great Western Hospitals (GWH) Smoke-Free policy and Treating Tobacco Dependency implementation as per the national directives, for inpatient services.

The Treating Tobacco Dependence Lead Advisor will be responsible for the development and implementation of the new Treating Tobacco Dependence Service and will implement Trust wide support
for smokers to quit.

They will be influential and dynamic in working on local and national agendas as part of the specialist nursing team within the Unscheduled Care Directorate.

The post-holder will be responsible for delivering and teaching evidenced based practice.

They will develop and maintain high quality networks to share learning from across the trust and wider systems in BANES, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW).

They will support the organisations Great Care campaign and future 'Smoke-Free / Treating Tobacco Dependence Strategy.


The post holder will lead and manage a small team of smoking cessation advisors, providing specialist tobacco treatment interventions to adult inpatients, and to provide seamless onward referral for ongoing tobacco treatment support in the community.

The post holder will also proactively support culture change
and the promotion of the Smoke free Trust.

  • Provide specialist individualised and evidence-based tobacco harm reduction treatment interventions to support the care and education of all adult inpatients who smoke.
  • Assess and analyse complex data gathered from various sources to enable effective and informed decision-making regarding tobacco harm reduction treatment interventions
  • Lead and line manage the team of tobacco treatment advisors
  • Plan, organise and prioritise own patient workload to ensure the demands of the service are met.
  • Use negotiation and persuasion skills to overcome barriers and obstacles to the delivery of tobacco treatment where patients and other stakeholders are resistant.
  • Plan, document and evaluate individual patients smoking cessations plans in collaboration with the patient and their clinical team and ensure there is continued support on discharge.
  • Ensure there is a continued community pathway for smoking cessation support on discharge.
  • Maintain accurate patient records, including assessment and treatment plans for patients as part of the patients' electronic patients record system.
  • Develop a robust onward referral process to community smoking cessation advisors/teams.
  • Establish effective pathways for safe, effective, management and supply of treating tobacco dependency pharmacotherapy to inpatients.
  • Provide opportunistic brief advice to smokers in the clinical setting or grounds of the Trust (staff, patients, carers, or visitors)
  • Ensure that the service provided is accessible to all groups of adult inpatients to help reduce health inequalities.
  • Proactively support the promotion of the Trust Smoke free site.
  • Work collaboratively with the Staff Health and Well-being team in providing Trust staff who smoke support in treating their tobacco dependency.
