An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Public Health role within our Maternity Team.


Our maternity services here at Warwick hospital we have 3000 births a year and a dynamic and diverse team to help support the safe provision of care to mother, babies and families.

We are looking to recruit a motivated individual who fits our person specification.

The post holder will be required to have great communication skills, be passionate about tackling the inequalities in health and work well within a small team.

As part of the NHS Long Term Plan, all expectant women and birthing people and their partners will be offered support via a maternity smoke-free pregnancy pathway.

As part of this pathway all women and birthing people admitted to hospital who smoke will be offered NHS funded tobacco cessation treatment and follow up support.


The post holder will work with the Public Health Midwife and the maternity team to achieve element 1 of the saving babies lives care bundle and reduce smoking in pregnancy by providing individualised stop smoking support to women and families in a flexible and innovative way.

This post will contribute to tackling inequalities in health through promoting and supporting people to stop smoking.

It focuses on engaging with people in all maternity settings and offering them practical support to change their behaviour to achieve their own choices and goals.

While supporting them to make positive health changes that will improve pregnancy & birth outcomes and longer-term family health.

Work with the specialist Public Health Midwife, Risk Perception Midwife and the maternity team to deliver stop smoking support, delivery of the smoke-free pregnancy programme with those women and families.


Specifically, the post holder will:


Provide stop smoking support throughout pregnancy and the post-natal period, using the support of interventions such as brief advice, Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring and Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).


Ensure that all referrals to the Stop Smoking in Pregnancy Service (SSIPS) service and Fire Service have been completed in a timely manner.


Work with the Public Health Midwife to ensure areas within the hospital and community have the correct equipment and supplies and provide CO training if necessary to midwives and staff.


Promote the general health and wellbeing of people who use the service by signposting them to healthy lifestyle advice and support services.

Seek out opportunities to develop and implement stop smoking services in a range of maternity settings.

Support the set up and on-going provision for inpatient NRT in the maternity department.

Identify women and birthing people who need risk perception and refer appropriately.


Work with mínimal indirect supervision operating within the assessed level of competence and being accountable for all aspects of own work.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

An in-depth understanding of maternity care and experience working within a maternity or similar setting.

Training and knowledge on smoke-free pregnancy pathways and the available support.


Ability to plan and deliver stop smoking advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications, working within recommended protocols and guidelines.

This may involve individual, telephonic, on-line and group work sessions in a variety of settings and venues.

A sound understanding of developing individually tailored support plans including recommending treatments based on assessed needs.

Be able to provide evidence based general health, lifestyle advice and support to people using the service e.g. healthy eating, physical activity, stress management. This will include individual and group-based interventions, signposting and referring to other health, community, and voluntary services.
