Accounts assistant and bookkeeper
We're looking for an experienced accounts assistance or bookkeeper that would like to work in a small practice environment.


About Us
Baker Noel is a long-established family firm of Chartered accountants based just outside of Bedford. We offer a range of services, including accounts preparation, taxation, business advice, audit, bookkeeping, payroll and company secretarial.

We have a broad range of clients, from sole trader and tax return only clients, to partnerships and small companies, to medium sized companies and international clients.

Our focus is on providing excellent service to our clients, by supporting them and their businesses.


The job


We are looking for somebody that has experience working in an accounting practice and is able to assist with various aspects of the firm's work, including accounts preparation, bookkeeping and payroll, and general admin work.


The successful applicant should have good knowledge of bookkeeping systems, filing VAT returns, general administration and an understanding of statutory accounts requirements.


It will be important for the successful applicant to be able to work independently but also work closely with others within a small team.


For the right applicant we can be flexible on working hours and days, so may suit someone looking for shorter daily hours or 3-4 days a week.

Salary will be £25,000 - £30,000 pro rata, depending on experience


Your responsibilities will include:

  • Bookkeeping both managing your own clients and covering for other bookkeepers during holidays etc.
  • Accounts preparation working with the accounts team as needed to prepare accounts and working papers
  • Office administration, including filing of tax returns, scanning documents, chasing clients
  • VAT return preparation
  • Payroll cover

The key attributes we are looking for are:

  • Communication, both written and oral, with clients and the rest of the team
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Attention to detail
  • Multitasking
  • Ability to work to deadlines

Minimum criteria:

  • IT literate, with a good working knowledge of MS Office
  • Two years' experience working in a practice environment
  • Experience using various bookkeeping packages, including Xero, Sage, QuickBooks etc.
  • Valid driving licence with your own car

Desirable skills:

  • Experience using IRIS Accountancy Suite
  • Experience preparing payrolls
