Job description

Part Time / 18.5 Hours Per Week / Fixed Term for 14 Months

Would you like to play a key role in ensuring public highways in Leicester are maintained and safe for all residents and visitors?

The Highways Maintenance group look after the public highway within the City.

We carry out inspections to maintain the carriageway, footway and cycleway infrastructure in a safe condition and ensure works are carried out on time, within budget, in accordance with specifications and codes of practice and to acceptable standards.


This is a fantastic opportunity for a Highway Management Officer to work join our team to undertake condition surveys and inspections of the highway assets, carrying out risk-based assessment to identify and prioritise maintenance work requirements.


This is a part-time, temporary position covering paternity leave, working 18.5 hours per week, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday one week and Thursday and Friday the next week.

Your time will be shared between the office and being on site at various locations across the city. Therefore, it is essential you have a full driving licence.


What you'll be doing


You'll inspect, assess, record, estimate and monitor works which keep public highways, pedestrian, and cycle ways infrastructure of the city in a safe condition and provides a one-stop service and ownership for local highways and street scene concerns.

By determining general maintenance work requirements and specifications for repair traffic management, safety arrangements etc, you'll issue orders for maintenance works as well as inspect and identify defective highway reinstatement works, unsafe working practices.

Using your experience of working with measuring equipment and systems, you'll provide cost estimates and quotes for highway maintenance works.

You'll carry out duties on site such as inspections, dealing with highway enquiries and will include meeting members of the public, ward councillors and council officers.


What you'll need


With previous practical experience of working in a technical environment, highway maintenance or similar, you'll also have experience of interpreting plans and maps, contract documents, measuring and valuing work.

You'll have knowledge of highways legislation & guidelines sufficient to estimate works and give advice as well as be qualified with Highway Inspector Accreditation and NRSWA Supervisor Accreditation or be willing to attain these within agreed timescale.

Using excellent communication skills, you'll be able to effectively engage with the public and others associated with highway works and street scene enforcement to deal with matters concerning programmes of works and act decisively and assertively when enforcing relevant legislation.
