Catering Assistant

Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 2.30pm daily (occasional weekend work) full year


or

Bootham term time plus 15 days in summer holidays. 38 weeks a year. (Bootham summer break is generally 8 weeks, 3 of these will be worked)


Bootham School makes and serves over 600 high quality lunches daily, and being a part boarding school, we serve over 100 breakfasts and evening meals all week.

We pride ourselves on the excellent quality and extensive range of our home cooked meals.

Our busy and friendly catering team is looking for two conscientious, flexible and easy-going Catering Assistants to help prepare students', staff and visitors' meals, and occasional special events.


You must be conscientious, flexible, polite and helpful, and able to work calmly under pressure in a busy school kitchen environment.

You will work under the direction of the Chef to prepare food and assist with cooking meals, plus serving meals, and cleaning the dining room and kitchen.

You must be able to maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and excellent customer service.

Experience of large-scale catering is essential.

£9.63 per hour. Uniform and meals provided.

Overall Purpose:


To be an effective and helpful member of the school catering team, and to assist the evening Chef to prepare quality meals that meet the standards required, at the times and for the occasions required, whilst respecting the Quaker ethos of the School.


Key Accountabilities:


  • General food preparation
  • Basic cooking, under the guidance of the evening Chef
  • Serving meals to students and staff at the hot servery
  • Helping set up the Dining Room and assist with clearing away and tidying after meal service
  • Assisting with any daytoday cleaning of equipment, e.g. dishwashers, sluice and other equipment in the washup area in order to ensure that it continues to function efficiently
  • Reporting any faults or problems to the Catering Manager as soon as possible to avoid more serious situations arising, having particular regard for own health and safety and the health and safety of other users
  • Assisting the rest of the team with any other tasks that need carrying out under the direction of the evening Chef

Skills and Competences required in the role:

  • Conscientious, flexible and easy going personality with the ability to work calmly under pressure in a busy environment
  • Ability to keep work area clean, tidy and hygienic
  • Excellent basic cooking and food preparation and presentation skills
  • Polite and helpful with all colleagues, school staff and students
  • The ability to quickly switch between tasks with ease and a good sense of humour
  • Previous experience of working in a largescale catering environment is essential

Rate of pay
£9.63 per hour


Other benefits
Overalls will be provided by the School you will be expected to keep them clean and in good condition.

You will also receive a meal and refreshments free of charge during your shift.
