Description

The Capture Gamma-ray Assessment in Nuclear Energy (C-GANE) research project aims to determine whether water present in spent nuclear fuel materials might be detectable via an associated capture gamma-ray emission.

This project is a collaboration between Lancaster University, the National Nuclear Laboratory, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and Sellafield Ltd.

This role is part of this significant investment made in this project by EPSRC, with this appointment being based at Lancaster.

It concerns the role of Research Associate that will focus on the manufacture, characterisation and optimisation of novel macro porous materials to act as effective analogues for water in spent fuels.

You should have a PhD in Materials Science or Engineering (or equivalent) with a strong background in the design, manufacture, characterisation and testing of materials, with evidence of the ability to use numerical processes to aid optimisation of material structure for performance.

Experience of macro porous materials, collaboration (both academic and industrial), of working in multinational teams to strict deadlines and a willingness to travel internationally, is highly desirable.

You will be joining the highly-regarded Nuclear Science and Engineering research group at Lancaster, with this project led by Profs Malcolm Joyce, Andrew Kennedy and Stephen Croft, and will work in a well-equipped, laboratory-based research environment.

This is a fixed-term, full-time appointment until 1st October 2027.

The University is a member of the Athena SWAN Charter, which recognises and celebrates good employment practice undertaken to address gender inequality in higher education and research.
