The opportunity:

An excellent opportunity has arisen in a newly created role to lead a team responsible for actuarial projects (within the P&C Actuarial team) with responsibility for actuarial projects, performing bespoke reserving exercises and delivering analytics across the UK portfolio, while helping to communicate the financial risk and its consequences, all of which are fundamentally important to our business.

The role holder will also get an opportunity to partake in regulatory reporting and insights such as assist in production of actuarial function report.


You will work closely with our UK Reserving teams - Retail, Zurich Municipal, Commercial and Planning & Reporting - to understand and derive insights impacting the UK-wide results, identifying trends and bringing insights to senior stakeholders from the wider business, with whom you will gain exposure on a regular basis.

Using strong analytical and mathematical skills, you'll work alongside some of our most talented actuaries.

You'll also liaise with other areas of the business, including Finance, Underwriting, Pricing and Capital, to develop a broad understanding of the business and promote process change that will result in a real difference.


Take lead and ownership of various actuarial projects, you will be in a unique position to help shape future processes and the operating model of the team along with interactions with regional and group teams, with exposure to senior stakeholders and with support from a number of people committed to the projects from within the team and spread throughout the UK Actuarial Reserving and other departments.

What will you be doing?

  • Lead a team in providing actuarial services to the UK Chief Actuary P&C, Heads of Reserving and other business partners, including insights into underlying performance and business implications on topics with a moderate to high level of complexity
  • Responsible for leading Actuarial projects which will encompass analytics
  • Strong collaboration with Actuarial Data and Systems team to help deliver improvements to the actuarial department
  • Liaise regularly with the Heads of Reserving and their teams to provide support with the reviewing, reporting and communication of results on an IFRS and Solvency II basis each quarter
  • Lead in the delivery of new analyses and insights to develop a deep understanding of the UK P&C business model, its underwriting strategy and its interactions with customers
  • Support and advise Finance, marketfacing business units, and other functions on reserving and strategic business decisions
  • Clearly highlight, document and explain any assumptions made
  • Assist in production of the Actuarial Function Report
  • Deliver specific portfolio reserving analyses and deep dives to aid senior management decision making
  • Assist with the production of and discussions relating to the strategic business plan
  • Drive continuous improvement in all pieces of work conducted
  • Support the UK Chief Actuary P&C in regulatory delivery and engagement.
  • Provide technical advice, counsel, coaching and mentoring within the Projects and wider Finance and Actuarial Reserving teams as appropriate

What are we looking for?

  • Significant relevant general insurance experience (e.g. reserving, regulatory reporting, Solvency II, data analytics, business planning, pricing, capital, finance bookings or auditing)
  • A qualified Actuary, though partqualified actuaries or other relevant qualification could be considered
  • A serious and professional attitude towards compliance of regulatory submissions with an eye for attention to detail in order to support accuracy
  • Passionate about driving insight and process improvement
  • Experience in leading others, as well as managing and coaching trainee actuaries
  • Professional, enthusiastic and positive attitude
  • Excellent teamworking, stakeholder management, communication and interpersonal skills are also required
  • Able to cope with change, manage and meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Able to use a creative, openminded and proactive approach
