Description
This post would be suitable for either a new consultant or a consultant well established in their field. For those new to consultant practice we are able to offer scheduled supervision within the job plan and for experienced colleagues we are keen to support special interests

You will join 15 existing General Paediatricians in providing general paediatric cover in a hot-week rota 1:12 with 1:12 on call.

Six other consultants on a separate rota cover the neonatal unit.

Relocation expenses are available.

You will contribute to the following clinical services:

  • Inpatient care for general paediatric wards
  • PAU cover
  • Outpatient clinics as per programme and depending on interests
  • Late shifts on alternate weeks (additional to a middle grade or nurse practitioner)
  • The care and support of other team members and colleagues.
  • SPA activity

The Paediatric Department is committed to providing the highest standard of inpatient and outpatient care on the District General Hospital site and in the community.

The general paediatric and neonatal rotas are split and consultants have on call responsibility for one of these rotas. This post does not involve on call for the neonatal rota. All consultants have a special interest in one or more areas and have Child Protection responsibilities. Paediatric admissions total around 4500 per annum.

There are 2700 new patient referrals from general practitioners and the birth rate is currently increasing, currently being between per year.

The closest tertiary centre is Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, which provides support for all specialties and provides a PICU retrieval service for the region.

The post holder will be a General Paediatrician.

They will provide consultant cover as a "hot-week "on the paediatric ward on a 1:12 basis, supervising junior staff, as well as 1:12 consultant on call for general paediatrics.

The post holder will also take part in a late shift (5pm-10pm on Monday-Friday when on call) covering the paediatric wards in order to support the SpR in delivering high quality care for acutely unwell children and young people.

We have a Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) situated just off our paediatric wards, which is staffed separately by an additional consultant to the ward consultant 10am -6pm Monday to Friday.

All admissions come through PAU and are seen by junior staff under the supervision of the PAU consultant. PAU remains open until 9pm with the on-call consultant supervising. This post involves 10 PAU sessions a year.

The post-holder will be responsible for elective paediatric care.

They will do general paediatric outpatient clinics based at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and in a peripheral hospital in Bridgwater.
