Somerset Villa is a 13 bedded unit offering rehabilitation assessment and treatment to those with a range of continuing mental health problems.

Many service users require treatment under the Civil Section of the MHA 1983.


The service operates a multi-disciplinary approach to care that includes nurses, doctors, occupational therapists and psychologists who work together in devising individualised care packages to minimize the effect of on-going psychological symptoms, promote mental health and facilitate the development of sufficient coping skills, knowledge, confidence and motivation.


To practice core values of recovery by focusing on improvement in functions rather than symptoms and assisting in developing social and occupational roles for service users.

Establish effective working relationships with service users, carers and families and encourage their participation in the recovery process.


You will be working as a member of the ward nursing team, to participate in the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and risk assessments, under supervision and in line with the patient centred approach to care and Trust policies and procedures.

The post holder will work with the multi-disciplinary team to promote a culture of engagement and activity. He/she will be expected to co-ordinate and run recreational and therapeutic activities both on an individual and group basis with support from senior staff members as required

  • Work with the named nurse in drawing up individual care plans, carrying out risk assessments and ensuring that these are regularly monitored.
  • Carry out and be responsible for specified aspects of a care plan as delegated by registered nurse.
  • Assist the named nurse in the implementation and evaluation of individual care plans and the maintenance of progress reports.
  • Encourage service users, either individually or in groups, to make full use of ward facilities and therapeutic activities in line with their care plans.
  • Work with, talk to and listen to service users and ensure any change in their condition is accurately and promptly communicated to the named nurse and the MDT.
  • Accompany patients to various agencies, centres and other hospitals in the community and outside the Trust as required.
  • Take due consideration of the cultural, social and religious beliefs of patients', relatives and visitors and respect patients as individuals whose needs include social, spiritual, emotional and physical care.
  • Ensure that patients' nutritional support needs are met. This may include helping patients to get comfortable for meals, assisting with feeding where necessary and assisting with serving meals.
  • Assist trained staff to uphold a high standard of nursing care in accordance with practices and procedures.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe and pleasant physical environment for patients and staff.
