This is a substantive post to support primarily the expansion of the coronary intervention service at the Trent Cardiac Centre.

We are looking for a talented and dynamic individual to fill this new post within the Cardiology Department at the University Hospitals Nottingham NHS Trust (NUH).

The Trent Cardiac Centre is one of the major Interventional Cardiology units in the United Kingdom, with a national and international profile for service, innovation, and research.

There are currently eight City campus based interventional cardiology consultants, five of whom additionally provide structural interventional services. A further three visiting coronary interventionists contribute to the PPCI rota.

The successful applicant will specialize in coronary intervention, and in future there may be an opportunity to develop an interest in structural interventions or CTO procedures.

NUH serves a regional population of circa 2.5 million, is a designated Heart Attack Centre for the East Midlands and delivers over 400 PPCI procedures annually, with around 1300 total PCI procedures.

Main duties of the job

NUH has an established TAVI service, with circa 150 procedures performed annually. Other cardiac structural interventional services performed include PFO, VSD, and para-valvar leak closures; LAAO and Mitraclip procedures.

Working for our organisation

Secondary and tertiary cardiology services are delivered on both NUH campuses, at Queens Medical Centre (QMC) and Nottingham City Hospital (NCH).

The tertiary catchment covers Nottingham and surrounding districts, North Nottinghamshire, and parts of Lincolnshire and Derbyshire (population approximately 1.3 million).

Secondary cardiology services in Nottingham are provided over both campuses, with the majority of acute cardiac admissions coming through the emergency department based on the QMC campus.

The Trent Cardiac Centre (TCC) is a bespoke cardiac services building providing two new cardiac catheter laboratories, a day case unit, and day case echocardiography.

There are also two cardiac surgical theatres, dedicated cardiac intensive care and high dependency units, and combined cardiology and cardiac surgical ward accommodation.

An additional two cardiac catheter laboratories used for diagnostic angiography, cardiac pacing and cardiac electrophysiology are based in the nearby radiology department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post will include three sessions of work per week in the cardiac catheter labs. The workload will be a mixture of elective and non-elective coronary intervention procedures. Most activity will be delivered within the TCC.

The appointee will participate in the consultant of the week on-call rota rotating through three cardiac in-patient facilities on a 3:21 rota; a separate weekend on-call on a 1:10 rota; and a separate weeknight on-call on a 6:10 rota.

Time off in-lieu is given for weekend working.

In addition to clinical work, based on the interest, commitment to clinical research is expected.
