Job summary:

The DCMS Tourism Team's role is to work with Ministers to set government policy on tourism, and to support and drive growth in the sector: pre-pandemic, tourism accounted for 4% of GVA, £75bn of spend, and 1.7m jobs.

The team supports both the supply side - with stakeholders such as accommodation providers, attractions, and leisure venues, as well as Local Authorities and Destination Management Organisations - and those generating demand, including our sponsorship of VisitEngland and VisitBritain (British Tourism Authority).

The domestic branch of the team works to deliver policy outcomes that support the recovery, growth and resilience of the domestic tourism sector and to ensure that policy affecting the UK's visitor economy across government is consistent, is in line with the Tourism Recovery Plan, and takes into account the needs and views of the sector.

We are looking for two new Band Bs for these important roles, which involve leading policy development and engagement across Whitehall on several key policy areas and supporting efforts to rebuild the UK tourism industry following the impact of Covid-19.

Job description:

These roles represent a great opportunity to work in a small, dynamic team, in one of Whitehall's most exciting Departments.

The successful applicants will play a crucial role in supporting the tourism sector to deliver on growth and productivity, with responsibilities likely to include:

Role 1 -
Domestic Connectivity, Innovation and Skills

  • Leading DCMS policy on Domestic Connectivity, working with DfT to embed tourism into transport policy, improve domestic connectivity, and develop last mile connections.
  • Developing new policy on Innovation, working with DCMS Digital and BEIS to identify opportunities to use tech to bolster the visitor economy.
  • Leading the team's engagement with BEIS, DfE and DWP on careers and skills policy.
Role 2 -
Sustainability, Regulation and Place

  • Leading DCMS policy on Sustainable Tourism, including producing a Sustainable Tourism Plan
  • Leading on Placebased policy, working with departments including DLUHC and Defra to ensure Visitor Economy interests are embedded into policy making and funding decisions across government.
  • Leading on Regulation, ensuring that DCMS can represent the needs of the sector to other departments on domestic regulatory issues.
Both roles also involve acting as the Regional Lead for engagement with DMOs in one geographical region e.g. the East of England.

These are demanding and rewarding jobs that offer excellent development opportunities as well as a great opportunities to work closely with tourism stakeholders, cross-Whitehall departments, and the DCMS Minister for Tourism on delivering these objectives.

They require flexibility to pick up new tasks and policy areas as government priorities change and new work arises.
