The responsibilities for the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero for 2023 are as follows:

  • Delivering security of energy supply
  • Ensuring properly functioning energy markets
  • Encouraging greater energy efficiency
  • Seizing the opportunities of net zero to lead the world in new green industries

For 2023, our priorities are:

  • Ensure security of energy supply this winter, next winter and in the longerterm bringing down energy bills and reducing inflation.
  • Ensure the UK is on track to meet its legally binding Net Zero commitments and support economic growth by significantly speeding up delivery of network infrastructure and domestic energy production.
  • Improve the energy efficiency of UK homes, businesses and public sector buildings to meet the 15% demand reduction ambition.
  • Deliver current schemes to support energy consumers with their bills and develop options for longterm reform to improve how the electricity market works for families and businesses.
  • Seize the economic benefits of Net Zero, including the jobs and growth created through investment in new green industries.
  • Pass the Energy Bill to support the emerging CCUS and hydrogen sectors; to update the governance of the energy system; and to reduce the time taken to consent offshore wind.

Job description:


  • The International Net Zero (INZ) directorate, where this role would sit, leads on the UK's efforts to tackle global climate change. It is a rewarding and dynamic place to work with a strong emphasis on inclusion, flexibility, and development.
  • The team is dynamic, fastpaced and proactive. We provide strategic oversight and direction to climate change governance boards within
    DESNZ and across Government. The scope of our work is broad and diverse from domestic Net Zero to international adaptation, cutting across FCDO, HMT, Defra and a range of other Departments giving the post holder a strong knowledge of the big picture on climate policy.
  • Through these governance boards and working directly with DGs and Directors, we help build consensus within and between departments, facilitating cooperation and providing a space for debating climate policies before they are put to Ministers. In doing so, we help ensure a wholeofGovernment, strategic and streamlined approach to decisionmaking on some of the most complex and crosscutting climate policy areas. Our team therefore gets a unique insight into decisionmaking at the most senior levels.
  • The role offers a unique opportunity to be at the heart of Government's efforts on climate change. You will make contacts across
    DESNZ and the rest of government, and facilitate collaborative discussions. Through your strong stakeholder engagement and communications skills, you will support the team in maintaining a highlevel overview of HMG's direction of travel on climate policies.

Person specification:


  • The role will include:
  • Maintaining a strategic overview of the team's stakeholder engagement, and using this to manage and drive the team's stakeholder engagement strategy.
  • Engaging with lead official's xHMG to build a picture of department's general direction of travel on climate matters.
  • Briefing and minuting the boards for the
    DESNZ Director General of Net Zero Strategy and International, and xHMG senior officials.
