Job Summary


NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) laboratories provide a range of diagnostic and reference services to meet the needs of patients and those who treat them.


The H&I department in Colindale provides testing and support services for transplantation, transfusion and immunogenetic diagnostic testing and performs typing of platelet donors, bone marrow volunteers and cord blood donors for the NHSBT panels using Next Generation Sequencing technology.


Working at the Colindale laboratory, you will provide vital support to qualified scientific staff in a role which includes sample reception, DNA extraction and general laboratory support duties.

The role of the Biomedical Laboratory Assistant / HHTO also includes entering donor and patient information into the laboratory database and the generation of computerised worksheets.


Main duties of the job


Working in the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) Laboratory, you will be required to participate in a range of routine clinical, technical and scientific activities in preparing and testing blood samples from transplant patients and their donors, with the support of your supervisor and other team members.


  • You may be required to support and train less experienced staff in some instances.
  • You will be required to undertake precise repetitive manipulation of equipment and blood samples and carry out routine tasks on a regular basis.
  • You will be required to handle blood samples and a range of equipment.
  • The role will require you to work and provide support during the routine opening hours of the laboratory.
  • You will be required to manually handle equipment on a daily basis weighing up to 13 kgs, with or without mechanical aids, with appropriate training.

About You

Experience and Knowledge

  • Experience of working with Information Technology such as Microsoft Office.

Qualifications and Training

  • Willingness to undertake further training and development.
