The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer - Cancer Services plays a strategic leadership role in ensuring and consistently developing a high quality cancer nursing service and workforce across the Trust.


  • Working in partnership with the Lead Cancer Manager, Lead Cancer Clinician, and the MDT /Cancer Performance Manager, the Lead Cancer Nurse supports the development and implementation of NBT as a centre of excellence in relation to cancer strategies.
  • The development of positive working relationships with Divisional Directors of Nursing and cancer and Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialists, for whom the Lead Cancer Nurses provides clinical and professional leadership, is essential to the effective delivery of this role.

  • Cancer Services participates in the development and configuration of cancer and palliative care services to maximise quality of care and ensure cost effectiveness within the Trust.

  • Cancer Services leads on patient experience and seamless quality of care across cancer services, ensuring consistency across divisions with regards to patient pathways.

  • Cancer Services works with the Lead Cancer Manager, Lead Cancer Clinician and MDT/Cancer Performance Manager to ensure that the national measures of care and met and that teams are ready and responsive to the national cancer peer review process (QSIS) and is responsible for local implementation of national cancer/palliative care policy in relation to nursing.

  • Cancer Services works closely with the Lead Cancer Manager, Lead Cancer Clinician and MDT/Cancer Performance Manager to ensure that new developments, projects, targets and objectives are met and that cancer is incorporated within healthcare governance strategies.

  • Cancer Services attends the Trust's Cancer Board, is a core member of the BNSSG CCG Cancer Working group and represents the Lead Cancer Nurses at the SWAG Cancer Alliance Board.

  • Cancer Services provides strategic leadership for the Living with and beyond Cancer initiatives across the Trust in partnership with a range of external healthcare agencies.

An exciting opportunity, has arisen at North Bristol Trust to work strategically to shape the delivery of cancer care and high quality cancer patient experience as Trust Lead Cancer Nurse (Associate Chief Nursing Officer Cancer).


As a key member of the Cancer Leadership Team, the post holder will work along side the Cancer Services Manager, Lead Cancer Clinician and AHP Cancer Lead to make a real difference planning and delivering the Trust Cancer Strategy, ensuring the provision of high quality personalised care and support and outstanding patient experience.

The role will provide specialist expert clinical strategic leadership for the Cancer Nursing Workforce, Personalised Care and Cancer Patient Experience.

Clinical Leadership


Assistant Chief Nursing Officer - Cancer Services:

  • Is an associated member of the Senior Professionals Forum (Nursing, Midwifery and AHP) whose role is to provide leadership and direction to the profession with the Chief Nursing Officer
  • Provides clinical supervision/mentorship including regular professional meetings with cancer clinical nurse specialists and other cancer workforce teams
  • Is responsible for the leadership and management of the Macmillan Wellbeing Centre and PCS team
  • Is responsible with the relevant Deputy Divisional Directors of Nursing / Service Managers for developing new specialist posts and roles in cancer care
  • Is responsible for the implementation of national and local nursing strategies for cancer nursing.
  • Acts as an effective role model and disseminates and shares best practice at local, regional and national level by conference presentation and through publication
  • Leads and participates in relevant cancer care audit, research and development activity, on a multi professional basis
Clinical Governance and Quality


The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer - Cancer Services:

  • Works inter-professionally with colleagues on the implementation of policy that impacts on the cancer patient pathway
  • Actively participates in the development and revision of frameworks for service improvement
  • Should be able to identify potential areas of risk within sphere of responsibility
  • Ensures robust quality improvement projects related to cancer and palliative care are undertaken and disseminates results appropriately
  • Uses the results of audit to effect change in practice at NBT
  • Is expected to contribute to regional and national cancer care developments
Strategic Leadership

  • Provides professional nursing advice relating to general, specialist and strategic policy on cancer nursing issues which may impact the Trust
