Here at Serco, we are looking for an experienced Assistant Director to join our team at HMP Dovegate.

The Assistant Director is a key role responsible for the delivery of functional elements of the Contract, in line with Service Specifications and Prison Service Instructions.

The role will be responsible for a functional area within the contract, for example Residence, Security and Operations, or Interventions, and may also include managing part of the accommodation profile.


As Assistant Director you will responsible for the strategic planning of an area and management of resources in delivering against the objectives set out in the Contract.

You will also be required to carry out duties of the Duty Senior Manager assuming operational responsibility for managing the prison regime.

This will include adjudications and managing incidents in accordance with Incident Management protocols.


Key accountabilities include:


  • Concisely articulates business issues, areas of improvement and formulate a variety of solutions / innovations. Work with key stakeholders to translate findings into a practical action plan.
  • Generate innovative ideas that are strategically sound, progressive, and challenge the status quo.
  • Work with all employees to foster an entrepreneurial culture which supports ideas and new initiatives to enhance our level of service delivery and cost efficiency.
  • Acknowledge and reinforce high quality work and outstanding performance efforts; provide consistent recognition and encouragement to the team.
  • Develop and maintain up to date Directors Rules (change to 'Local Policy') which are to clearly detail all procedures operating within the facility regarding your functional area.
  • Responsible for delivering continuous improvement through quality initiatives
  • Responsible for your functional delivery of Service Delivery Requirements specified through negotiation with the Ministry of Justice in the Annual Custodial Service Delivery Plan (ACSDP).

What you'll need to do the role:
In order to carry out this role successfully, you must have a minimum of 2 years relevant custodial experience. It is also essential that you have previous Line Management or People Management experience.


You will also have:

  • Up to date knowledge of all mandatory custodial training requirements.
  • Demonstrated sound leadership qualities including motivation and ability to lead by example.
  • Alignment with Serco's Governing Principles and commitment to the highest standards of service delivery.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the operational process' and procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Have a good understanding of conflict resolution & deescalation and also management of risk and conflict.
