Description

Senior Research Assistant

Physiotherapist or equivalent

(Fixed term for 1 year and five months)

Everyday activities such as looking around, sitting or any use of our arms and hands, relies on us having good control of our head and trunk.

However, children who have a neuromotor disability such as cerebral palsy (CP), or a neuromuscular disorder (NMD) such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) or one of the other inherited NMDs, often experience major difficulties with effective trunk control.

This inevitably impacts on their functional abilities.

This MRC-funded project (MR/T002034/1 "Quantification of head and trunk control for children with neuromotor and neuromuscular disorders") combines physiotherapy assessment of children with advanced methods in artificial intelligence to develop an accurate, low-cost clinical tool to provide automated, objective assessment of the segmental level of trunk control in children with CP and SMA.

You will work primarily at Manchester Metropolitan University but will be expected to travel extensively to schools and NHS centres throughout Manchester, Liverpool and Cheshire, and to NHS Trust sites at Oswestry, Birmingham and other Trusts through the UK.

This post is based in the Department of Life Science, one of the largest Departments in the University attracting high numbers of students on a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The Department also provides research training programmes for doctorate and Masters level postgraduate research students.

The Department resides within the Faculty of Science and Engineering and benefits from spacious, modern and well-equipped teaching and research facilities having benefitted from recent significant and on-going investment.
