Overall Purpose of Role

The Section Head is responsible for the day-to-day management of the scientists and resources within toxicology.

The role incorporates line management, responsibility for health and safety, research output and quality (both to comply with GLP guidelines and to ensure quality control of routine assays in the section).

In conjunction with other business functions, is responsible for the delivery of appropriate training to develop scientists within their section.

The Section Head will run their section, to produce an effective investment plan to ensure smooth running of lab equipment and planned capability builds in line with customer needs.

In addition, the section head will work with the procurement group to monitor consumable use to ensure the most appropriate and cost-effective suppliers are used.

Working alongside sales and marketing, the role is also responsible for the appropriate people resourcing of projects.

The Section Head role will have significant interaction with other parts of the business, particularly the Research Leaders and Site Directors, to ensure the effective and consistent day-to-day running of the section across the organisation.


Main Duties:

  • Health, Safety and the Environment: Actively engage with the HSE officer, Safety Coordinators and Safety Committee to improve HSE processes within the organisation and ensure legal obligations are being fulfilled. Taking responsibility for the H&S within the toxicology section the Section Head will cascade relevant information down to all members of the section, ensuring that individual responsibilities and being fulfilled and that all procedures are being adhered to. The Section Head should lead by example demonstrating the highest levels of health and safety.
  • Be the focal point for toxicology, displaying the confidence, commitment and positive attitude required to engage others and drive them to succeed and achieve in their daytoday activities so that the section's output is maximised. They will lead by example, demonstrating the highest levels of professionalism in order to meet the expectations of customers.
  • People Management: Ensure all members of the section are effectively developed and managed, either directly or indirectly, against the stated competencies of their roles. This will be through the use of (but not restricted to) training records, regular 1:1 meetings and the setting of clear objectives to help deliver on the company goals through the appraisal process.
  • Work with the HR department and others as necessary, to provide training and development opportunities that will allow the company to meet its strategic challenges.
  • Plan for future requirements through the effective use of talent management.
  • Communication and Influencing: Effectively communicates to all levels of the business in a professional and positive manner. Is able to chair and participate in meetings ensuring efficiency and encouraging contribution from all. Can use influencing skills to illicit the desired response from groups, this will include interactions with other functions and departments in the business to help drive the daytoday running of the company through the deployment of its resources.
  • Resource Management: To appropriately resource all projects, taking into account customer requirements, potential future business needs as well as the needs of the individual. Planning for recruitment and selection, including working alongside HR to streamline the processes and the sales team to make sure potential knowledge gaps within the business are filled.
  • Effectively manage laboratory resources appropriately, making sure that each project has access to the equipment it requires.
- : Champions all quality aspects of GLP compliance. Ensures quality control is fundamental in all assays to ensure reproducible tests with reference to acceptance criteria incorporated at validation. Throughout studies maintains control data and facilitates lot to lot comparisons to ensure validity of results throughout a study. Monitors experimental output volume and quality from the team ensuring that suitable high standards are maintained and implement improvements and training where necessary. Work with other SH's as a team to monitor and report Key Performance Indictors and implement organisational improvements, and training as required, to drive quality standards in the business to meet client expectations

  • Continuous Improvement: In conjunction with other functions & departments within the business and employing others were necessary, actively engage in a programme of continuous improvement to help the organisation meet its stated objectives.

Qualifications/Role Requirements:

  • Hold a PhD in biology (or related life science) or a BSc/MSc in biology (or related life science) with clear, demonstrable and relevant laboratory experience
  • Have excellent management, teamworking and communication skills
  • Proactive problem solving bot
