Temporary Gap Student (two positions available)

Residential positions from ASAP to end 1st July 2023. Abberley Hall is ideally looking for a gap student to cover the summer term in 2023.

The successful applicants will enjoy the company of young children and be able to work well with others.

Abberley Hall is a co-educational preparatory school (ages 2 to 13 years) consisting of approximately 150 children in the school, and offers boarding.

The school is situated 12 miles from Worcester in the heart of the countryside.

It is a half an hour's bus ride from Worcester and a good two hours by train to London and therefore ideal for those used to a rural set up, but less so for those wanting easy access to London or city life.

These positions should only be considered by applicants who are prepared to make a mature and responsible contribution.

It is important that you enjoy the company of young children, wok well with other people, take guidance well, that you are polite, lively and hardworking.

We especially require gap students with equestrian and swimming skills.

We offer an allowance that should provide well for personal needs and travelling in the holidays.


ROLE:

Undertaking general duties within all areas of the school, and particularly assisting in the classroom, with Boarding, Sports and Outdoor Education provision, as well as the weekend and evening activities.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

(The job will include some of the following)

Supporting teaching staff during lessons.

Supporting the Boarding Community and being involved in daily duties.

  • Supervising children at break times
  • Assisting teachers with evening duties, as well as entertaining and socializing with the children in the evenings
  • Assisting with the organistation of the children's laundry and clothing
  • Being 'on call' overnight in the Boarding House on a rota basis
  • Supervising meal times including setting a good example to the pupils and encouraging them to eat using their knife, fork or spoon whilst displaying appropriate table manners
  • Assisting in the 'locking up' of the school
  • Providing assistance during games sessions and match days, to both the Boys' and Girls' teams.
  • Preparing equipment for games sessions and matches
  • Coaching a team either alone or alongside another member of staff depending on experience.
  • If experienced in a particular sport you may also be asked to umpire/referee fixtures
  • Assist in preseason sessions before the start of term


Provide office and school staff with administrative support, including registration check, photocopying, filing, shredding, answering the phone and various other tasks such as dealing with parental concerns.

If a parent has a simple query then please answer this, but if you feel it is more complex or you do not know the answer please refer them to a teacher.

Assist with the various events that take place throughout the year, for example:

  • Sports Day
  • Parents' evenings, serving refreshments and interacting with the parents in a friendly manner
  • Clubs in the school
Where possible train to become a lifeguard and carry out lifeguarding duties.

Be present at INSET training sessions before the start of each term.


Go about every job with energy and enthusiasm and get involved in as much as you can in the day to day life at Abberley Hall School.

Assisting in the children's health and welfare.

  • To assist in the children's overall cleanliness (teeth, showers etc)
  • Providing pastoral care for the children and being available for them at all times when on duty
  • Distribution and collection of laundry
  • Getting children up and putting them to bed
  • Supervision of juniors changing for games and showers
  • Being responsible for organizing the tidiness of dormitories and being actively involved in helping the children with this process


The laundry is run by two laundry ladies who come in between Monday and Friday, but it is necessary for you to operate the washing machines over the weekend.

Assist in the packing and unpacking of trunks.

This only happens at the start of the academic year in September and when they return home the following July.

Communication is a very important part of your role.

  • Liaising with the Head and his wife, senior matrons and teaching staff on any relevant information
  • Relaying all messages taken to relevant members of staff and children
  • Communicating with children professionally in conjunction with school policy
  • Communicating with all staff professionally and in conjunction with school policy
  • Communicating with parents professionally and in conjunction with school policy
  • Communicating daily the housemistress/housemaster and staff in all that concerns the children, boarding life and with regard to all the above points
