Description

The Head of Midwifery (HOM) will be a senior practicing midwife who provides overall operational leadership and direction for Midwives and Nursing staff within the Maternity and Gynaecology Services.

The post holder will be the lead midwife to support delivery of the maternity transformation Plan and the National Maternity Agenda.

You will be a point of contact for advice and expertise on all matters relating to professional nursing and midwifery issues.

Reporting to the Director of Midwifery - the post holder will deputise for the Director of Midwifery in their absence.


The post holder will lead and deliver the work streams for the maternity transformation programme as outlined within the national maternity agenda including the anticipated single delivery plan.

Working in partnership with women, birthing people and expert consumer groups you will be responsible for designing a quality service that promotes a positive health model delivering change in service provision in line with existing and new government policies.

The post holder will ensure the delivery of key quality, performance and governance plans and work collaboratively to deliver the Trusts strategic direction, finance and business agenda.

Work with the Director of Midwifery for Womens Health and Paediatrics ( WHP), to develop and implement a strategic vision for maternity /gynaecology services.


The post holder will be responsible for defined initiatives across a range of issues, particularly with respect to continuous improvement in patient care delivery pathways and clinical quality.

Provide assurance of proactive management of clinical and cost improvement plans, ensuring appropriate actions are taken to mitigate or respond to identified risks.

They will support the DoM for the delivery of a complex agenda which drives efficiency and quality initiatives across maternity and Gynaecology.

Integral to the role is the delivery of work streams within the wider health economy and the local maternity system (LMNS) to ensure that maternity care is reflective of the national agenda for maternity services, namely the Three year Delivery Plan -National Maternity Agenda As Head of Midwifery the post holder will have professional and managerial responsibilities for midwifery within the trust and will deliver services across the 3 maternity pathways for antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care within the acute hospital site and community which includes collaborative working with Surrey Heartlands transformation board and is professionally accountable to the DoM.


Ensure that service user information is current and accurate and helpful for women to make choices about the services being offered and involve users in the production of such information.

Divisional and Strategic Development Support the Quadrumvirate team in integrating the work of the midwifery, nursing, administrative and other professional/clinical staff to align these around the delivery of effective and efficient services.

Contribute to the development of the midwifery profession through proactive involvement in local, regional and national forums. Represent the Trust on midwifery and maternity issues when required and delegated by the Chief Nurse or DOM.


Represent the Director of Midwifery when required Support the DoM to ensure professional nursing leadership with appropriate structures are in place which support midwives and nurses at all levels.

Ensure that all statutory requirements are met and that all midwifery practice is consistent with the NMC rules and codes of practice.

Support to the Quadrumvirate in identifying key drivers for change and opportunities for growing, improving and redesigning services and initiating strategic implementation plans.

Lead the continued strategic development of maternity hubs and the continuity of carer model in alignment with NHSE guidance.
