The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (Times Higher Education Awards University of the Year 2019 and Scottish University of the Year 2020) is a leading international technological university, possessing a large internationally recognised Engineering Faculty, with a proud history of successful joint ventures with industrial and enterprise partners.

As part of the University's strategic development, the Scotland 5G Centre (SG5C) was established in 2019.

S5GC is an innovative partnership between the University of Strathclyde (which hosts the Centre), the University of Glasgow and the Scottish Futures Trust, with investment from the Scottish Government, and is the National Centre for accelerating the benefits provided by 5G technology to Scotland's Industry and Public Sectors.

We bring together entrepreneurs with a network of small businesses, corporates and government bodies and foster innovation and collaboration by targeting a diverse set of partners across the business, technology, and telecommunications industries.

5G mobile communication presents new opportunities for mobile/wireless networks - exciting new use cases through to new business models for network operation and the provision of services.

The S5GC provides both testing facilities and expert advice for companies, academics and public sector wishing to adopt private wireless communication solutions.

We are an integral part of the Scottish innovation ecosystem, that drives innovation and new opportunity for organisations.

Having established a suite of 5G Connect Hubs located across Scotland, the S5GC provides organisations with an affordable, low risk means of assessing new wirelesss conmmunication based solutions to address current and future business needs.

Each Hub provides access to a private 5G network, a Business Engagement Manager and technical support, to enable organisations to test new connectivity solutions and explore new opportunities.

The Centre's focus is on 4 key Action Pillars:

  • Coverage
  • Enabling the testing of new mobile solutions to address internet coverage gaps.
  • 5G Support Supporting organisations on the procurement and deployment of bespoke private 5G networks,
  • Engagement working with organisations to demonstrate the value of 5G enabled solutions to business

  • Innovation

  • Supporting new innovation and access to investment in wireless connectivity

The Scotland 5G Centre offers a new and exciting opportunity for a Chief Executive Officer to continue to shape and direct our multi-faceted approach to ensure capitalisation of the opportunities that 5G technology presents.

Working closely with Scottish Government and the founding partners, you will drive strategy, set priorities and deliver the key performance metrics whilst providing leadership to the experienced S5GC team.

As the Centre's work and activities continues to grow it will further engage and partner with local authorities/councils, universities and colleges, public services, other centres of excellence, SME's and larger corporations to act as a catalyst for demonstrable 5G use cases.

Many of these potential partners are already working towards utilising 5G, creating blueprints and use cases to reference.

Funding for the Centre currently runs to the end of March 2024 and the key function of this role in the short term will be to coordinate the delivery of a new multi-year sustainable funding plan, identifying funding channels from both public and private sector, including the Scottish Government.

Key to this will be showing the impact of the Centre and managing the political landscape.
