Purpose


As Laboratory Supervisor, you will deliver Lab Services at BioCity Nottingham in a smooth and efficient fashion to the satisfaction of all customers and play a supportive role in setting up the Co-Labs across the Pioneer Group.


The Role


As Laboratory Supervisor, you will be responsible for the daily running of the NMR lab (Co-Lab premium), Utility rooms, and Rent a bench lab (Co-Lab) in Nottingham.


You will work with the Director (Incubator Services) on implementing the strategy for Lab Services by helping the site team across the Pioneer Group to set up (Co-Lab), Utility rooms and Co-Lab premium laboratories.


You will also work closely with the Director of the Corporate Relationship and marketing team to organise lab-specific events like the Lab Suppliers Fair.


The outputs of your efforts will be measured by retaining and expanding the analytical services in Nottingham, minimising the downtime of the equipment in the Utility rooms and high-end equipment like NMR and the success of the Suppliers Fair events across the Group.


Duties and Responsibilities

You will have primary responsibility for:

NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance)

  • You will be responsible for the operation and daily maintenance of the Bruker Avance III 400 MHz NMR, which includes carrying out QC tests like Line shape test, Proton and Carbon sensitivity test.
  • Troubleshooting of the NMR spectrometer and TopSpin 3.2 software.
  • Your role will also be to support existing occupiers and external users in preparing NMR samples, running the samples on the NMR and sending the data to the end users. Keeping a log of the samples run on the NMR to help with the accounting at the end of the month.
  • You will proactively look at weekly maintenance like Nitrogen fill and organise the helium fill with the supplier in time.
  • You will support the occupiers by providing them with equipment familiarisation training for the NMR.
  • You will be dealing with lab consumable suppliers to negotiate the best deal for the NMR consumables.
  • You will work with the Director (Incubator Services) to help increase Lab Services revenue by proactively looking for new external users for the NMR.
  • You will also be responsible for drafting SOP and risk assessments for the NMR lab.

Utility Room, Tissue Culture lab and Co-Lab:

  • You will be instrumental in the smooth running of the Co-Lab, tissue culture lab and utility room by managing the booking system, drafting and updating the policies and procedures for the lab, and reviewing the risk assessments from the end users using the labs.
  • You will be responsible for drafting the operating instructions for the equipment in the tissue culture lab and organising the training for the end users with the equipment manufacturers for plate readers.
  • You will be responsible for ensuring the tissue culture lab (especially the class II safety hood) and Co-Lab is cleaned and disposal of the clinical and chemical waste solvent, thereby minimising the chance of crosscontamination in the labs.
  • You will liaise with the maintenance support suppliers to organise the yearly maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of the equipment in the tissue culture lab, Co-Lab and utility room.
  • You will work with the individual site team across the group to help them review the risk assessment, prepare SOP, and help them procure equipment by liaising with the lab equipment suppliers (Fisher, SLS, VWR).
  • You will help Director (Incubator services) in conjunction with the site team to identify ideal locations for the Co-Labs, Utility room and tissue culture lab.
