We are looking to recruit enthusiastic and dynamic consultants with a special interest in Intensive Care Medicine to join our progressive team of intensivists, and allied professionals.

Successful applicants will be able to participate in teaching both under and postgraduate students.


Applicants should have full GMC registration and License to Practice, and be on the Specialist Register or within six months of receiving CCT at the time of interview.

An Enhanced DBS (Adults and Children) check is required for this post.

  • Undertake a Block Working Pattern on the Critical Care Unit
  • Participate in the Consultant oncall duty
  • Undertake administrative duties involved with the care of his/her
  • Promote high professional standards of clinical care of patients and the health and safety of the critical care
  • Maintain continuing education and professional development at least to the requirements of their base Specialty

The post holder will:

  • Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the critical care services for the Department


The successful applicant can work flexibly in Critical Care, covering either HDU or ICU, there are shifts on days, nights and weekends available.


Our 13 bed adult Critical Care Unit currently is staffed to 6 HDU (level 2) and 7 ICU (level 3) beds with flexible level 2 and level 3 beds ratio.

We are currently expanding our bed base, and soon opening a L1 surgical unit.


The intensive care unit admits approximately 760 critically ill patients yearly with 260 level 3 patients with high APACHE 2 scores.

The majority of these patients are ventilated and have at least two organ failures. The high dependency unit admits approximately 500 patients per year; half of them following planned elective surgery.


The critical care unit has 24 hour cover from a team of twelve consultants - two full time ICM and ten who work in anaesthesia and ICM.

Nursing care is delivered on a 1:1 basis for level 3 patients and 1:2 for level 2 patients and there is multi-disciplinary support from physiotherapists, dieticians, technicians, a pharmacist and administrative staff.

There are twice daily ward rounds which provide a forum for teaching and exposure to practical procedures.

Consultant on-calls are on a rolling block basis to maintain continuity of care

The unit have two accredited consultants who can perform echocardiography and conducts annual FICE course. There is ample opportunity to learn and complete FICE accreditation.

The unit participates in ICU network groups and undergoes annual peer review.

If successful this vacancy will require an enhanced DBS check at a cost of £41.90. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary


In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £13.
