Job Summary


This role is an excellent opportunity to join our busy Collections Management team and learn how to carry out a range of core museum tasks in a national museum.

Project Delivery Assistants are responsible for the accurate location and movement of objects using barcode technology. The team get to handle, move and document the vast range of objects IWM cares for. You will contribute to projects working alongside the permanent team to improve how usable the collection is. The work will include basic documentation, labelling, preparing collections for digitisation or for movement to new storage locations.

The role is based at IWM Duxford and will require travel to our other branches.


Your duties will include:

  • To undertake movement of collections to and from store using barcode technology. This will, on occasion, include the moving licenced and hazardous objects as part of the IWM collections. Locations must be updated as set out in the Museum's Location Policy and Procedures.
  • Completing the documentation of the collections using IWM's collections management system (Axiell Collections) or using Excel sheets, data would need to be listed accurately and comply with IWM procedures.
  • To assist in the delivery of projects, for example, support of:
  • Collection movement projects,
  • Reorganisation of storage areas, including undertaking work to document, label and pack collections,
  • Contributing to the housekeeping, cleaning and maintenance of collection items and storage areas,
  • To identify any collection condition issues, risks or building defects (plant or fabric) to the Head of Project Delivery.
  • To ensure adherence to safe working practices, working to agreed method and risk assessments.
  • The postholder is based at IWM Duxford but will, on occasion, be required to work or attend meetings or training sessions at any of the museum's locations as directed (travel expenses would be provided).
