Our Employment and Training provide help and support to people with mental health problems who want to find paid employment.

Do you have previous experience of supporting individuals to find suitable employment opportunities?

Do you have experience in providing support to people with a mental illness; or experience of providing care and/or support services within another social care setting in either a paid or voluntary capacity?


This Vocational Service provides support and practical help to service users whose aim is to find full or part time work.

Employment Specialists offer one to one support to clarify employment goals using an 'Individual Placement and Support' (IPS) model.

The service is tailored to individual needs and any difficulties related to finding work are addressed.


The role will be based within the East Kent IPS Service working across the areas of Thanet, Folkestone, Hythe and Romney Marsh Areas.

What I do and achieve

  • Supporting and helping people in finding and retaining work; achieving vocational goals.
  • Liaising with employers and securing placements for SUs and supporting them in this placement;
  • Building and maintaining relationships with employers, training providers and other services
  • Providing career guidance as appropriate
  • Researching and maintaining own awareness of available courses and training suitable for people who use the service, and potential funding streams.
  • To prepare individuals for employment through assessing each person's individual employment needs through vocational profiling, and then actively support them to achieve their employment goals.
  • To provide individualised, ongoing support to individuals once they have secured employment to assist them in sustaining employment.
  • To promote the benefits of supporting service users to access employment within the wider team, with external employers, aiming to raise the profile of IPS services, and raise expectations around the ability of service users to access paid employment.
  • To proactively engage and work with external employers to openup and secure paid employment opportunities for people who have experienced mental health problems. In particular ensuring the service is focused on accessing the hidden labour market.
  • To provide advice and support to employers, as agreed with the individual, which may include negotiating adjustments and ongoing contact with supervisors to ensure job retention.
  • To assess individual support needs related to work which might typically include help with benefits, travel to work, managing health at work etc.
  • To provide effective in work support to individuals once they secure paid employment to ensure they retain it.
  • I work with the team to process and induct referrals, data collection and data management, recordkeeping, responding to enquiries about the service and other admin duties relevant to the post.
  • I assess clients by focusing on their individual goals and address any unmet social needs by signposting various resources, opportunities and activities within the Trust and in communities to promote choice and informed decision making.
  • I maintain professional relationships with particular attention to confidentiality and the maintenance of boundaries.
  • I challenge any inequalities and to address any discrimination whilst ensuring a process of learning for the organisation.
  • I support the team in promoting a recovery orientated environment by identifying recovery
- focused activities and imparting information and education as required.

  • I positively promote and support independent living for service users in the community by maintaining extensive knowledge and links with community resources and actively supporting service users to access them e.g. in relation to employment, community living and leisure.

Who I am?

  • I have the ability to make a comprehensive assessment of an individual's situation and needs; to develop, implement and review risk management plans and devise support plans and activities to meet these needs.
  • I have a strong working knowledge of mental health and appropriate intervention methods QCF Diploma or NVQ level 3 in Care or Certificate in Community Mental Healthcare (or working towards) or an equivalent qualification.
  • I am empathetic and have knowledge of/an interest in community mental health provision.
  • I have line management experience including interviewing and recruiting.
  • I have experience of networking, collaborating and building relationships with a wide range of people, including diverse stakeholders and across multidisciplinary teams.
