Description
The Trauma & Orthopaedic Directorate is a busy and progressive unit, expanding to meet the needs of the population. Further expansion is planned to enable capacity to meet increasing demand from the health community.


Theatres:

The theatre suite comprises 4 laminar flow theatres and a day case procedure room Wards: There are currently 56 trauma beds across 2 wards, 12 ring-fenced elective orthopaedic beds, 4-day surgery beds and 5 childrens beds within the paediatric unit.

There is booked access to a High Dependency Unit consisting of 3 beds, as well as booked access to the ICU consisting of 3 beds for elective cases.


Clinics:
The Fracture and Out-patient Clinic is purpose built for the Orthopaedic department. It also houses the Plaster Room and minor operation procedure room.


Hospital Departments:
The Orthopaedic service is supported by the various departments that make up a busy general hospital. Radiology has a full complement of services e.g., MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine as well as plain film imaging.

A PACS and RADIN network is available to review images online around the trust. Access to Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy service on site. Each middle grade doctor is responsible to one of the Orthopaedic Consultant teams and will rotate between those teams.

The duty rota consists of being on call 1: 10.

Orthopaedic surgery is undertaken in a separate Manfield Theatre Suite comprising 4 laminar flow airflow theatres. Trauma surgery is undertaken in dedicated daily trauma lists within the Manfield suite. Out-patient clinics are undertaken in a separate Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinic suite.

The 16 consultants are organised into four firms according to their sub-specialty interests: Lower limb arthroplasty; foot and ankle surgery; upper limb surgery; and paediatric orthopaedics.


As well as the seminars mentioned above there are facilities in the postgraduate medical centre with an extensive library, audio-visual aids, study rooms etc.

The department itself has its own specialist library.
