The University of Portsmouth is an ambitious institution with a track record of success.

One of only four universities in the south east of England to achieve a Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework and ranked in the top 150 in the Times Higher Young University World Rankings.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Portsmouth seeks a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) for a period of 2 years from the 1st October 2023.

This post will be based within our Centre for European and International Studies Research (CEISR).

CEISR members work in a range of disciplines including Area Studies, History, Politics, International Relations, International Development, Sociology and Gender Studies.

CEISR provides a unique interdisciplinary space for scholars in the humanities and social sciences to identify thematic synergies that break free from disciplinary silos.

In doing so, the Centre focuses on three core thematic research areas:
marginality, inequality and security.

CEISR has strong roots in Area Studies and actively embraces the New Area Studies (NAS) agenda, which rejects traditional definitions of 'area' in terms of geographical proximity or political and territorial boundaries and reconceptualises areas as 'spaces' that vary by research theme in their scalar and temporal dimensions.

Working under the guidance of the Director of the Centre for European and International Studies Research (CEISR), the PDRA will contribute to key CEISR-related research projects and funding bids focusing on marginality, and will assist with the gathering of data for potential impact case studies.

The PDRA will play a key role in helping to articulate CEISR's contribution to the New Area Studies agenda and strengthening the Centre's interdisciplinary research environment.
