    Description

    The paediatric neuromuscular centre at the Great Ormond Street Hospital Institute of Child Health is one of the largest in Europe, with more than 2,000 patients seen each year. A number of experimental therapeutic approaches are being developed for spinal muscular atrophy and other neuromuscular conditions including Nemaline myopathy. The diverse range of patients means that there is opportunity for development of skills and knowledge and this is supported by our education and senior nursing and medical teams.

    The experience and specialist knowledge within the clinical and research teams ensures the delivery of an excellent standard of clinical care and provides a whole host of learning opportunities.

    Main Duties of the Job

    The successful candidate will work in the Great Ormond Street Hospital Institute of Child Health paediatric centre and contribute to the development and coordination of the neuromuscular research portfolios including the Nemaline Myopathy trial and SMA REACH UK natural history study.

    In addition, the candidate will contribute to the co-ordination and implementation of a number of research programmes. The candidate may be responsible for liaison with families, recruitment of participants, facilitation of the consent process, administration of the clinical interventions required as part of the study, observing and responding to side effects (e.g. unexpected fall), as well as liaising with research staff in the Trust, drug companies and other study sponsors and ensuring the accurate collection and submission of data, in line with the study protocols and research regulations.

    Job Responsibilities

    The successful applicant will be working with international neuromuscular expert physiotherapists and physicians within the Clinical Neuromuscular Physiotherapy Team at Great Ormond Street Hospital to ensure best clinical care and research practice.

    It will involve completion of clinical trial protocols and specific projects, including development and validation of functional scales and other novel outcome measures as well as analysis of the e.g. SMA natural history data.

    The post-holder will have opportunity to work within the national SMA network to promote teaching and implementation of standard of care in SMA as well as facilitating robust and meaningful data collection.

    The post holder will have the opportunity to explore their own project/case-load and to provide cross-cover or support to fellow research physiotherapists.

    Academic/Professional Qualification/Training

    Essential

    • Degree or equivalent qualification in physiotherapy
    • Health Professions Council Registration
    • Evidence of CPD maintained in portfolio including attendance at relevant postgraduate courses

    Desirable

    • Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and relevant Clinical Interest group(s) eg APCP
    • Good Clinical Practice Certificate (GCP)

    Experience/Knowledge

    Essential

    • Broad grounding as a qualified physiotherapist within an NHS setting
    • Post-graduate experience in paediatric physiotherapy
    • Knowledge of audit, research methodology, clinical governance and GCP
    • Understanding of professional development issues and NHS reform

    Desirable

    • Knowledge of paediatric neuromuscular disorders
    • Previous experience in a tertiary centre
    • Experience of team and department working in physiotherapy
    • Understanding of the problems of children with muscle weakness

    Skills/Abilities

    Essential

    • Ability to work as part of both a physiotherapy and multidisciplinary team
    • Ability to prioritise workload using time management and delegation skills
    • Good teaching and presentation skills to other staff members
    • Good verbal and non-verbal communication skills across the age ranges and ability to work with and teach patients and families
    • Computer literate, including excel and databases

    Desirable

    • Assessment of paediatric neuromuscular conditions
    • Able to motivate and develop others, junior colleagues, children and families

    Salary: £45,839 - £55,255 per annum, depending on experience
