About the role:


A Senior TW Designer (STWD) is required in Area Central to support the production of temporary works designs and checks.

The STWD will be part of a temporary work design team based in North Acton and will interact with external TW designers from the JV parentcompanies and through the supply chain.


Reporting to the Area Temporary Works Design Manager, the Senior Temporary Works Designer will ensure that Temporary Works (TW) designs are adequate and safely designed for construction, use and dismantling, and that development and delivery of TW designsare in accordancewith the SCS Programme and the Temporary Works Procedure.

This additional ATR will allow to increase resilience in the team, reduce extreme workload on existing TW Design team and allow to do more CAT 1 and CAT 2 designs and checks andcover additional STQsin the area reducing costs in comparison to using consultants

Role Responsibility

  • Ensure that a design brief has been established with full consultation, is adequate, in accordance with the actual situation on site, and that all construction loads are considered;
  • Advise the permanent works designer of any temporary conditions or loads that should be considered in the permanent works design;
  • Ensure that the design is independently checked for concept, structural adequacy and compliance with the brief
  • Ensuring SHEQ hazards and risks have been eliminated or reduced in the design. Where not feasible clearly highlight and ensure the Delivery Team are informed of the residual risks to be controlled.
  • Ensuring the delivery teams are provided with safe, workable temporary works in timely manner to suit programme via inhouse design or supplier/subcontract design checks.
  • Delivery of first class technical support to the SCSJV projects.
  • Working in accordance with SCSJV procedures for TW management.
  • Temporary works design from brief to issue of the final design package.
  • Proactively implement "SafebyDesign" and Observational Method where appropriate.
  • Preparation of Design Risk Assessments illustrating the development of design mitigation measures and communication with others in the construction process.
  • Temporary works design checking (including checks on supply chain proposals).
  • Contribute to SCSJV safety targets by proactive leadership.
  • Delivering value to SCSJV clients.
  • Develop relationships with internal and external client teams.
  • Ensure SCSJV process for temporary works management is applied fully and efficiently.
  • Site visits to aid identification of temporary works requirements and preparation of temporary works design briefs.
  • Contribute to the control of risk by identifying issues and providing appropriate responses.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by attending team meetings and contributing to the team development topics.
  • Civil or Structural Engineering Qualification, preferably BEng or higher (MEng, MSc), minimum of a HNC/HND (essential)
  • Chartered Membership of Professional Body (CEng MICE or similar, essential)
  • Previous experience of temporary works design (essential)
  • Previous experience of TW schemes in and around existing structures, especially NR (ideal)
  • CITB Temporary Works Coordinator Course (ideal)
  • Completed SMSTS (ideal)

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract.

Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the constructionof site compounds.
