- "The Waste Team provides an effective Waste Management service for the Site to reach Care & Maintenance. We manage the Low Level Waste and the Controlled Waste for the Site's decommissioning activities, with a primary focus of safe, compliant and efficient delivery of waste management operations. We would like to welcome an individual that can bring waste, radiological and environmental knowledge from another highly regulated sector, and innovate our offering to the business."_

Key Deliverables

  • Lead the team to fulfil shipment targets based on the Joint Waste Management Plan.
  • Provide training to Waste Engineers, Coordinators and Team Leader.
  • Audit department procedures and identify areas for improvement.
  • Drive standards on safety within the department.
  • Carry out timely investigations as required.
  • Ensure adequate planning to meet department goals.
  • Maintain high standard of waste advice across site programmes.
  • Provide decommissioning programmes with authoritative advice on the requirements for complying with waste legislation and transport of dangerous goods legislation.
  • Lead on generating Best Available Technique assessments for decommissioning programmes to minimise the creation of radioactive waste and their impact on the environment.
  • Provide technical support to projects and relay the clear expectations of waste management.
  • Provide authoritative advice for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Commit to continuous improvement of waste programme/strategies.
  • Support with both radioactive and nonactive waste consignments from site.
  • A customerfocused individual, the post holder will be expected to support delivery within his or her range of skills, knowledge, experience and competence.
  • Deputise as required for Head of Waste.

Qualifications and Experience:


  • HNC/HND or equivalent technical qualification (NQF Level 5) in a scientific, environmental or engineering discipline (essential).
  • Knowledge of environmental issues including practices, policies, legislation and stakeholders relating to radioactive and nonactive (controlled) waste management (essential).
  • Relevant experience in nuclear industry, ideally in areas of waste management (desirable).
  • Experience transporting dangerous goods and radioactive material (desirable).
  • Experience in developing waste inventories together with records management (essential).

Please note that this role is known as Lead Waste Engineer within Magnox.
