An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our passionate and forward-thinking surgical divisional team as lead for the Surgery Virtual Ward Programme, including clinically leading the virtual ward hub for surgery.


The post-holder will engage with Consultants, ACPs, and specialist nurses, and play a pivotal role in the identification, assessment and management of patients who would benefit from the collaborative care of the surgical virtual ward, across the seven service lines.

The role is both hands-on clinical work, alongside operational management of the surgical virtual ward hub and wider programme for new surgical pathway implementation.


The role involves a high degree of engagement and strong facilitation skills, to engage clinicians in the benefits of virtual ward pathways for patients, requiring a high degree of autonomy and self-guided work.

The clinical lead regularly represents the division both in the system and wider regional arena in regards to the virtual ward programme, and requires experience in communicating and presenting to a wide-ranging audience with ability to adapt approach to suit the environment.


  • To take clinical and operational leadership for the development and implementation of virtual wards within the Division of Surgery.
  • Agree the approaches for how stakeholder and clinician engagement will be maintained during this transformational change programme.
  • Develop models of service for the assessment and expansion of pathways over and above the initial pathways.
  • Ensure the implementation of the virtual ward programme meets its objectives, outcomes / targets.
  • Explore and recommend the commissioning, contracting and funding approaches in relation to the virtual ward service developments.
  • Provide clinical leadership to the project implementation through to business as usual.
  • Hold operational responsibility and oversight of the budget for the Surgical Virtual Ward Hub.
  • Play a lead role in the development of the organisational plans for improving patient flow, making sure the organisation understands virtual ward capacity, including transformation.
  • Contribute to clinical governance and patient safety agendas, ensuring that these are highlighted within the Division.
  • Support the development of a whole systems approach, which promotes continuous improvement in the quality of patient care, and the efficiency of the patient pathways.

Clinical & Operational:


  • Accept referrals via agreed protocols, inclusion and exclusion criteria within the service
  • To draw appropriately from a range of assessment tools and methodologies
  • Ensure that care is delivered with a clinically safe, costeffective and evidenced based approach
  • Support and share the best practice in the development and delivery of virtual wards
  • Have the ability to operate in a highly political and sensitive environment, adopting a non judgemental, but influential approach
  • Plan and prioritises own workload, exercising autonomous professional responsibility and attend multidisciplinary meetings relating to referrals or clients in treatment, where appropriate
  • Provide clinical supervision to all members of the multidisciplinary team who are involved in the virtual ward pathways
  • Evaluate clinical competence of staff using a performance framework and standard tools of measurement
  • Complete all requirements relating to data collection within the service and keep coherent records of all clinical activity in line with Trust policies and guidelines
  • Carry out clinical audits of service line performance, including patient feedback and evaluations, and collate and disseminate the results for feedback

Quality & Performance:


  • Take overall accountability for the development and maintenance of quality improvement outcomes for patients, ensuring that there is regular reporting in place and action plans for improvement, where necessary
  • Understanding of the importance of value for money and efficient use of resources in the design and implementation of pathways across the Division
  • Actively support the improved outcomes for patients by driving up the continued quality of care
  • Provide strong and consistent leadership and have the ability to work across boundaries, divisions and systems
