This post will be offered as a permanent contract.

The role itself is time limited for 3.5 years at which point your role could be extended, made permanent, or you could be redeployed to our pool of special project managers / advisers or redeployed to another suitable role.

Starting salary:
£32,876 rising to £36,229 per annum through annual increments being paid each year. (Pro rata for part time applicants).

Job description


4 Rivers for LIFE is an ambitious £9m project funded by the EU LIFE programme, Welsh Government and a number of partners to transform 4 river catchments in south Wales' (Usk, Tywi, Teifi & Cleddau) which are Special Area of Conservation, in order to restore populations of declining habitats and species such as salmon, lamprey, otters and freshwater pearl mussels.

You will manage contracts, notably to fence off sections of riverbank, plant trees and some farmyard infrastructure works.

You will be expected to have a good understanding of current agricultural issues, opportunities and remediation measures and have the chance to contribute you own ideas.


You will give presentations to interested groups, such as Angling Clubs, farming and recreational groups, to raise awareness of the river and its wildlife's importance, and to raise the profile of the LIFE project.

You will support the River Restoration and Monitoring officers in their work as required, for example on fieldwork and surveys.

You will ensure good governance of the project, including strict adherence to NRW's procurement and wellbeing, health and safety practices.


This is a fantastic role for someone interested in working closely with farmers on sustainable farming techniques and emerging best practice, as well as having an eye on conservation and ecology in South Wales.

The project is an opportunity to deliver real improvements on the ground during the lifetime on the 5-year project. You will have access to a wide range of agricultural and ecology training as part of the role.


We are ideally looking for someone with knowledge of the Usk river catchment to work with farms in this catchment, but if you have strong knowledge of one of the other 3 catchments we can be flexible on the location.


Knowledge and experience of the following:
Knowledge of agriculture, foresty and catchment management.

Experience of working with farmers.

Desirable to be BASIS FACTS qualified.

Knowledge of freshwater ecology.


Excellent team working and communication skills and the ability to represent the LIFE project to a variety of audiences including land managers.

The ability to undertake physically demanding field work in a variety of weather conditions and terrains. Where necessary/appropriate this includes lone working.

The ability to currently and legally drive a car in the UK.
