The opportunity


Do you want to play a part in the success of our Natural Resources (Mining, Metals & Paper) Underwriting business? Don't worry if you don't have the Natural Resources Underwriting experience, if you have an analytical approach and share our passion for teamwork and customer service, this role could be for you This is an exciting opportunity to join our Commercial Insurance team, based in Mark Lane, London.


As the Underwriter, you'll take a solution-oriented approach as you develop and maintain a strong network of relationships with our Broker partners and customers.

You will interact and cooperate with other Lines of Business as needed to ensure we can respond to our customers' needs.

This role is available part-time, job-share or full time.

This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people aren't available full-time.

What will you be doing?

  • Underwrite and analyse new and renewal business within delegated authority levels of highly complex assignments.
  • Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines and insurance laws and Regulations and pricing manuals.
  • Develop, maintain & collaborate with Line of Business representatives on referrals and other businessrelated needs, as appropriate.
  • Work closely with the Risk Engineering Team on major projects to evaluate and take the right underwriting decisions.
  • Work with the Finance function and support the premium collection, whenever required.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with cedants & brokers in support of business retention and acquisition and provide solutions for their insurance related needs.
  • Support the sales culture by being a Help Point for agents, brokers, and customers.
  • Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.
  • Complete detailed opportunity assessment with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
  • Qualify accounts to meet with the organization's appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity.
  • Assist in negotiating Terms & Conditions and closing deals.
  • Maintain underwriting files and assist with audits.
  • Ensure business is booked on time and KPI's are accurate.
  • Develop strong broker and client networks as related to industries underwritten by Business Unit.
  • Cross-Sell other lines of business to increase product density with the account.
  • Provide assistance on coverage issues with claims.
  • Handle & review large/complex underwriting submissions and annual underwriting reviews.

What are we looking for?

Essential

  • Underwriting, Broking, or Claims background.
  • Experience working in multicultural environments.
  • Experience in dealing with brokers and customers and their requirements.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise own workload.
  • Passion for teamwork and customer service

Desirable

  • Expertise in insurance policy wordings and equivalent broker and market clauses.
  • Bachelor's degree, ACII or other relevant professional qualifications.
  • Experience in Mining, Metals, Paper, or Industrial Property risks.
  • Knowledge of the London market environment and practices.
  • Knowledge of potential exposures inherent or associated with a wide range of professional and commercial operations.
  • Knowledge of UK and USA legal and regulatory system and key exposures.
  • Disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment and pricing.
