Description
To manage and administer the inpatient waiting lists for the General Surgery consultants. This will mainly be Endocrinology, Upper GI and Hernia theatre lists. However, cross cover will be required for Colorectal and Bariatric when annual leave is approved within the team.

Complete management and co-ordination of the patient waiting lists/times for all Consultants including booking pre-operative assessments.


You will be required to play a central role within the services, demonstrating meticulous attention to detail, working with sound judgement, initiative and decision-making both independently and in liaison with the General Surgery Support Manager and Performance Manager.

You will also be required to liaise with hospital medical and administrative staff, other departments, General Practitioners and patients.

The key tasks respectively involve monitoring patients' treatment pathway and coordinating treatment to ensure safety standards are met. To ensure theatre time is well utilised.

To work closely with clinicians in order to understand the treatment pathway of the patient and facilitate this accurately.

General Surgery is a well run service which is constantly evolving. You will be working with Consultants and junior doctors, nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

  • Provide administrative support to consultant/clinical teams including the management of consultants theatre bookings. Confirmation of consultant's timetables to ensure that appropriate cover is available for all clinical sessions.
  • To accurately track and monitor a large group of patients, ensuring their treatment is progressing correctly, and in RTT order.
  • Regular communication with consultant teams, clinical staff and directorate management to enable efficient processes.
  • Be aware of the needs and concerns of patients and to provide a friendly, efficient service to the patients. Use effective listening/communication skills when dealing with potentially distressed or bereaved patients and/or relatives. Use empathetic approach to patients and/or relatives seeking assistance from clinical staff/senior managers as appropriate.
  • To undertake additional administrative tasks and responsibilities within the specialty/clinical division as required by the division or general manager.
  • Adhere to all Trust policies including Infection Control, Hygiene Code, Data Protection Act, Uniform Policy, taking appropriate account of patients' rights and diversity and ensuring fair access to services.
