The University of Oxford is seeking to appoint to the role of

Head of the Proctors' Office, a senior professional services role.


The Proctors' Office (PO) is an impartial and discrete institution within the University which carries out work in support of decision-making and governance scrutiny by the annually elected Proctors and the Assessor.

The PO undertakes substantial work on individual student discipline and other casework matters, serving as the main point of contact for students and other University members for all enquiries, including but not limited to requests for advice and submissions of complaints, academic appeals, student misconduct referrals, student clubs' registrations.


In summary, the Head:
- provides leadership and management of the PO, with specific responsibility to serve as a trusted advisor on relevant University legislation and procedure to the Proctors and Assessor.
- gives particular focus to the most complex cases and provides a challenge function that ensures that the decisions of the Proctors and Assessor are well-informed.
- engages with the Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellors, the Registrar and other senior officers on matters ranging from ceremonial events, complex matters of university governance, and understanding of university legislation and practice.
- presents proposals for legislative changes as university policy and/or external and statutory regulation requires.
- works alongside senior leads in the Academic Administration Division (AAD), this division comprising all central student administration and student-facing services.


This is a key role that works in partnership with teams within the Academic Administration Division (AAD), the University's group of central services focused on students, student support and their learning.

The Head will be expected to contribute to good governance, providing advice and exerting influence as appropriate with other senior officers across central services and the academic divisions of the University.

The role of Head of the PO formally reports to the University Committee for the Proctors' Office and is professionally line managed by the Academic Registrar, who is also head of the AAD.


The Proctors and the PO are currently based at University Offices in central Oxford, where other senior officers and some AAD teams are located.
