New opportunities have arisen in our well-motivated and highly respected team and we are looking for a senior practitioner to help take the service forward into the Trust's new developments within cardiac and respiratory care.

You will be based on our busy children's ward where you will have opportunities to use specialist play support for children coping with a range of cardiac and respiratory care including cystic fibrosis, PICU, sleep lab, HDU and Outpatients interventions.


We seek an excellent, flexible team player who is seeking a career development opportunity within a specialist area of work and who has a foundation of skills, creativity, energy and vision to add to the ethos of our well regarded 7 day a week service.


You will be required to work as a senior practitioner and liaise with the Play Service Manager on any day to day issues.


You will be actively supported in your continued professional development requirements as part of our regular team support and Trust opportunities in line with local and national guidelines.


To use advanced theoretical knowledge and evidence-based practise to assess, plan, implement and evaluate therapeutic play programmes within all areas within the Trust, where children are treated and in the community, contributing towards the holistic care of children, ensuring that the highest possible standards are achieved.


To contribute to the strategic development, maintenance, and evaluation of the play service throughout the Trust, holding responsibility for defined projects.


To be responsible for daily shift management for several Play Specialists and Play Assistants within the Play Service, providing clinical supervision, daily allocation of services and sickness monitoring.


To be responsible for the continuing professional development and overall performance of all staff in the Hospital Play team throughout the trust.

QUALIFICATIONS:
HPSET Foundation Degree in Healthcare Play Specialism or equivalent + NVQ Level 3/BTEC in Early Years/Child Development/Nursery Nursing

2 years post qualifying practice

Evidence of continued professional development relevant to role.

  • Communication
  • To establish effective communication, both verbal and written, with all members of the multidisciplinary team in the paediatric Directorate and other areas within the Trust.
  • To build effective working relationships at all levels of the Trust.
  • To be knowledgeable about the referral pathways used within the trust.
  • To be able to document both on hard copy and electronic, effectively.
  • To establish communication links with other agencies/hospitals and charities involved with the child/ young person.
  • To receive and provide highly complex and sensitive information when working with children/ young people, who may require extra support in understanding,
  • Patient/customer care (both direct and indirect)
  • To manage a caseload of children/ young people with complex needs across the paediatric Directorate, with a focus on children in the PICU/ High Dependency Unit, and to oversee prioritisation of referrals and workload for the rest of the Play team.
  • To be responsible for the facilities and to supervise play team activities provided to children and young people, appropriate to their age, development, ability, and medical needs within the paediatric Directorate and provide advice and guidance for the Hospital Play team.
  • To assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive and specialised care plans to achieve therapeutic goals, including preparation for invasive and noninvasive procedures, distraction therapy, and developmental and procedural play as part of the overall care to the child/young person.
  • To identify specific play activities to help individuals and groups of children/ young people to engage with hospital life and promote an understanding of treatment, including focused play interventions, like preadmission clinic.
  • To be responsible for monitoring, evaluating, and modifying therapeutic interventions to measure the child's/ young person's progress and ensure the effectiveness of the care plan.
  • To provide guidance and support to team members when dealing with emotionally distressing circumstances, while working with children/ young people with complex needs, including challenging behaviour.
