This role assists in tackling inequalities in health by promoting and supporting inpatients with varying degrees of mental illness to stop smoking or to support patients with harm reduction programmes whilst in hospital.


The post holder will raise the profile of smoking cessation across Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust inpatient mental health units by providing tobacco treatment, advice and support to individuals and groups of people who require assistance to reduce their harm from tobacco or for temporary abstinence whilst in hospital and provide advice and support to ward staff to assist in the implementation of the Smokefree policy within inpatient mental health units.


  • Provide smoking cessation support to inpatients with varying degrees of mental illness, giving tobacco treatment advice to reduce harm from tobacco or for temporary abstinence whilst in hospital.
  • Use existing systems in place for identifying newly admitted patients who smoke and ensure that they receive timely interventions to support them to be smokefree.
  • Provide advice and support to ward staff to assist in the implementation of the Smokefree policy within inpatient mental health units, reinforcing the training provided to inpatient teams by the Mental Health Smoking Cessation Trainer
  • Refer patients who want to stop smoking to community specialist stop smoking services
  • Identify and support ward smoke free champions to promote the smoke free message through their day to day work.
  • Raise the profile of smoking cessation across Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust inpatient mental health units
  • Ensure that Smokefree documentation is kept up to date
