THE ROLE
Our Junior Apprentice Scientific Support Operative is our entry level role into the business.

The role will equip you with a foundation of the scientific operations of the organisation, particularly in cell culture, reagent preparation and parts of cell-based assays, all of which are aimed at ensuring the smooth running of the laboratory practices and delivering high quality data to our customers.

You will be involved in providing Scientific Support to the Operations team in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and collaborating with colleagues to provide all the necessary cell cultures, media and reagents for customer studies on time and to a high standard.

You will receive the required training and development for this role and through your learning and knowledge, quickly understand the value and importance of this role.


WHAT WE EXPECT YOU TO DO
Reagent Preparation

  • Prepare reagents according to SOP driven methods or as directed by Study Managers.
  • Operate laboratory equipment competently, following appropriate training.
  • Communicate with Study Managers to ascertain required stock for studies.
  • Undertake stock checks and manage stock levels of prepared materials to ensure supplies are always at an appropriate level.
  • Collaborate with the procurement department to advise when additional materials/stock is required.
  • Identify potential issues associated with reagent preparation and troubleshoot to manage potential risks.
  • Prepare custom media/reagent preparation (MPs and RPs) documentation where required.
Laboratory Techniques

  • Understand and follow cell culture processes including: thaw, maintenance and banking of cell lines for routine and preassay cell culture.
  • Carry out pre assay steps including (but not limited to): dissociation steps, plate cells, plate coating.
  • Perform post assay steps including (but not limited to): assay take offs, and data checks.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues with routinely used equipment within the Scientific Support department.
  • Prepare buffers, media and reagents for all processes in Operations and Scientific Support.
  • Prepare and then aliquot customer samples for use in assay.
Compliance

  • Adhere to Good Documentation Practice, maintain and complete to a high standard which requires mínimal revision.
  • Continually perform documentation review to a high standard.
  • Actively participate in quality events such as deviations, CAPAs and risk assessments.
  • Update documents following the simple change control process in LIMS.

WHAT WE EXPECT YOU TO DO
Health and Safety

  • Adhere to all health and safety policies in the workplace.
  • Wear appropriate PPE where required.
  • Ensure compliance of COSHH documentation in support of correct handling and storage
  • Ensure compliance of COSHH documentation in support of disposal of materials and biological waste.
  • Contribute to the preparation of COSHH and identify risk assessments, supported by the Health & Safety Committee.
  • Identify and report and hazards or accidents observed in the workplace to the Health and Safety Committee.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR FROM YOU

We would like you to have the following:

  • An enthusiasm for science and a willingness to learn.
  • Be selfmotivated, proactive, and wanting to grow and develop their career with us.
  • The ability to understand and follow SOPdriven procedures with mínimal errors/revisions.
  • Laboratory experience in an academic or industrial setting, would be beneficial but is not essential.
  • Higher/Advanced Higher Biology or Life Sciences. (HNC/HND in relevant field would be advantageous)
