Mechanical Design Team Lead

  • Hybrid Working (This role involves Onsite working & Work from home)

Responsibilities:


  • Provide strong leadership to a team of mechanical engineers, mentoring and guiding them through project execution.
  • Advance the team through appraisals and professional development.
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative team culture to drive excellence in engineering solutions.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and completion of mechanical engineering projects.
  • Collaborate with crossfunctional teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems into larger projects.
  • Lead the design and development of mechanical systems, components, and products.
  • Utilize CAD software and other engineering tools to create detailed designs and prototypes.
  • Bring indepth knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices to the team.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in mechanical engineering.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to ensure interdisciplinary coordination and integration of designs.
  • Work closely with manufacturing, quality, and testing teams to ensure design feasibility and product integrity.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to team members, fostering their professional growth and skills development.
  • Support development of departmental initiatives and ensure adoption within the team.
  • Implement and enforce quality standards and best practices in mechanical design and development.
  • Conduct regular project reviews and evaluations to ensure the highest level of product quality.
  • Optimize resource utilization and project efficiency to meet deadlines and financial targets.
  • Oversee technical problems and obstacles that may come up during the design and development process by involving other team members with specialised knowledge.
  • Identify and implement effective solutions to ensure project success.

Essential Criteria:


  • Minimum 2:1 degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Proven experience (5 years) in mechanical engineering with a focus on design and development
  • Demonstrated leadership capability and ability to motivate and guide a team.
  • Proficient in CAD software (e.g., Solid Edge).
  • Strong understanding of key engineering principles such as material selection, mechanics, heat transfer, assembly techniques and manufacturing processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate effective collaboration within the team and with other departments.
  • Ability to convey complex technical information in a clear and understandable manner.
  • Strong problemsolving skills and the ability to address technical challenges.
  • Ability to optimize resource utilization and project efficiency to meet deadlines and financial targets.
  • Ability to design cost effective solutions from specifications against agreed budget and timescale requirements.

Desirable Criteria:

The following skills will be valuable but are not essential:

  • Experience (+2 years) formally leading a Mechanical Design/Engineering Team.
  • Experience with Design for Assembly and Design for Manufacture approaches.
  • Experience working with ECO and Business Systems (e.g. PLM).
  • Experience working with Jira software for task/issue tracking.
  • Appreciation of related engineering disciplines such as electronic design.
  • Handson practical experience of part manufacture, prototype assembly and testing.
