FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES


You will be required to effectively manage a Campus Patrol Team and associated operational activities to ensure the delivery of a professional, customer focussed service relating to the safety and security of people, grounds, buildings and their contents.


MAIN DUTIES

  • To assist in managing, and operating all functions and procedures relating to University Security and the Campus Patrol Team and to maintain records as required.
  • 2. To assist in ensuring the recruitment, selection, deployment, induction, ongoing training, supervision / management and appraisal of the Campus Patrol Team, including their welfare, morale and discipline and ensuring staff are treated with dignity, courtesy and respect.
  • 3. To assist in ensuring that all staff are trained to the required standards and are fully conversant with Security Services procedures and relevant legislation, and that they perform their duties in a proper, courteous and efficient manner adhering to relevant Standing Orders and procedures.
  • 4. To ensure that all staff are kept fully briefed as to their duties, that they receive up to date information as required (oral and written) and that information sources, briefing notes and folders are checked and kept up to date.
  • 5. To ensure the Control Centre is staffed with a minimum of two people at all times, and that operatives are fully competent to understand the University's central alarm and access control systems, and to respond in accordance with established procedures.
  • 6. To provide daily a written occurrence report to the Security Operations Manager, and to report personally on a weekly basis by arrangement.
  • 7. To be responsible for the administrative requirements that arise from the shift's activities.
  • 8. To assist in all emergency situations until more senior officers of the University arrive (where applicable), and to cooperate with emergency services as may be involved.
  • 9. To assist and advise on welfare matters, and direct students to other sources of assistance.
  • 10. To assist in making decisions on emergency problems considering cost, inconvenience to customers.
  • 11. To ensure the safety and security of the University community by dealing with and reporting problems, providing for the security of staff, students and visitors, liaising with/supporting emergency services as required.
  • 12. To ensure the safety and security of University property including patrolling both on and off site, checking security and safety of premises and contents, questioning and, if necessary, detaining intruders (as required) and reporting damage.
  • 13. To assist in coordinating security escorts to staff engaged in the transfer of money.
  • 14. To assist in managing fixed security points including barrier access, inspecting passes, identifying/registering visitors, checking bags and vehicles (where applicable).

Person Specification

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Proven ability to accurately communicate information which needs careful explanation or interpretation, both orally and in writing, to a wide range of people.
  • 2. Evidence of ability to explore customers' needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered.
  • 3. Evidence of ability to make independent and collaborative decisions and provide advice to inform others' decisions.
  • 4. Evidence of ability to work unsupervised to deadlines, planning and setting priorities for own work and that of others, and monitoring progress.
  • 5. Proven ability to solve problems using initiative and creativity by identifying and proposing practical solutions and resolving problems where there are a range of potential options available.
  • 6. Ability to effectively manage and motivate a team and proven ability to work well as an effective team member, providing advice, guidance, training and feedback to other team members where necessary. 8. Experience of working in a security environment and previous experience of liaison with the Emergency Services and/or other external agencies.
  • 9. A valid full group B driving licence.
  • 10. A current First Aid Certificate. If you do not hold one on appointment, you will be required to undertake training, arranged by the University, as soon as is reasonably practicable
    DESIRABLE CRITERIA
  • An understanding of the issues facing students within a Higher Education establishment.
  • 2. An understanding of working in a higher education environment.
  • 3. An understanding of health and safety issues, including risk assessments.
  • 4. Ability to speak Welsh or willingness to learn.
  • To be offered a Health Assessment at least annually by the University's nominated Occupational Health provider or nominated Doctor.
