Job summary:

As the UK faces an unprecedented challenge to the economy, it is vital the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is able to provide high-quality economic analysis to influence policies, inform decisions on competition cases and protect both consumers and businesses.

In order to meet this challenge, we are seeking skilled
Assistant Directors
of Economics to provide the necessary leadership.

In addition to this campaign, the CMA will soon launch an economist returners programme, aimed at recruiting professionals who have taken a career break - of two years or more - from working as professional economists.

The scope and complexity of our work has been increasing over the past years, for example, due to our growing portfolio of investigations that have a global angle and our ongoing work in digital markets.

The CMA's responsibilities now also include the Office for the Internal Market and the Subsidy Advice Unit.

The recent Autumn Statement also announced that the government would bring forward legislation that will give the CMA powers to implement a new pro-competitive digital markets regime.

These changes present exciting opportunities for accomplished economists.

Job description:

As
Assistant Director of Economics, you will work in a collaborative, collegiate atmosphere, with opportunities and the capability for some homeworking, to manage economic input into a diverse case load.

This includes investigations into mergers and markets, competition and consumer enforcement cases, and regulatory appeals.

With the opportunity to work flexibly across the full range of projects, or to specialise in certain areas, you will play a strategic role in the direction of individual projects, determining the key areas for investigation, the economic analysis required and how to gather evidence and mitigate risk.

You will lead a team of Economic Advisers and/or Assistant Economists, providing opportunities for staff to develop their skills through coaching and providing constructive feedback.

A key aspect of this role is the ability to deliver through others, by constructively assessing work produced by colleagues and by developing the abilities of the economists you work with.

To be successful in this role, you must have substantial proven competence as a professional economist (ideally in competition economics, or at least in a closely related area of applied economics), including work experience in the economic analysis of markets.

You will also need to demonstrate substantial experience of leading and managing teams in the design, development, management and timely delivery of economic analysis.

In return the CMA is a hugely diverse, rewarding and stimulating place to work - an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so.

We offer generous benefits, which you can review in full below.
