As the organisational expert act as ambassador in the promotion of high quality, cost effective and evidence-based medicines management.

Ensuring appropriate handling of medicines across the organisation and system/ partners include the provision of specialist advice, evidence-based advice on all aspects of medicines and their use.

To ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory medicines handling requirements, utilising complex knowledge of medicines management.

To lead on the medicines management optimisation agenda for the organisation, promoting safe, effective, and legal medicines use and handling at all levels of the organisation, and across all clinical teams, partners and commissioners.


To be the lead medicines professional within the Quality and Safety team, ensuring the delivery of core medicines governance work in terms of Medicines safety, Incidents/risks, Audits, Policies/SOPs, Documentation, advice.

As the organisational expert on medicines management, undertake the role of Medicines Safety Officer by planning, prioritising, and reviewing medicines management activity across CityCare and where it interlinks with its partners ensuring safe management of medicines.

To manage the medicines management team workload and pharmacy technician led activities. To manage the organisations medicines team workload, including service development work and projects within specific clinical teams.

To work with managers and clinical teams regarding medicines processes and policy, balancing risks and operational restrictions.

To provide advice to managers and clinical teams, considering service To be the organisations expert on Controlled drugs, to liaise with the Controlled Drugs Accountable Officer and participate in the CD LIN.

Utilising expert knowledge to lead on the delivery of effective and evidence-based medicines information/communication, education, training and competency assessments in a variety of forms by fully engaging with relevant groups including the ICB, Partners and CityCare to ensure all relevant clinical teams and services are working to the same standards.

To be the development pharmacist for the development and review of PGDs for the organisation and provide professional input into the assurance and approval processes for these.


Ensuring all medicines management activity falling within CityCares remit including anything connected with partners meets the standards required of PGDs To provide support to all the NMPs within the organisation, from a clinical, professional, legal and operational perspective, including participation in NMP education forums.

To provide prescribing analysis at an individual, team and organisational and partners level, and monitor this data in terms of formulary compliance and prescribing budgets/medicines costs.

To contribute to the education, training and competency assessment of NMPs Key Responsibilities The post holder will lead on all medicines safety, optimisation and handling processes within the organisation as detailed below.

Medicines leadership Medicines optimisation work planning To lead on the development of the Medicines Optimisation agenda within the organisation, and to manage the overall medicines workstreams for the organisation.


To provide strong leadership on medicines to all elements of the organisation, including the Quality and safety team, Workforce development, all clinical services in adults and childrens divisions.

To take the lead on medicines safety initiatives and planning. Represent CityCare at local, regional or national medicines meetings.

To represent Citycare at various local, regional and national medicines meetings as required, such as the regional MSO meetings, CD LIN, Area Prescribing committee.


Governance Medicines safety officer To undertake the responsibilities and duties of the Medicines Safety Officer as stipulated in current guidance.

To liaise and network with other MSOs in similar organisations. Facilitate the implementation of recommendations in national guidance e.

NICE guidance, NPSA alerts and local clinical guidelines and co-ordinate this activity across the locality. Advise and monitor adherence to these guidelines.

Incidents/Risks To support teams when medicines incidents occur, with advice and guidance. To collate and categorise all medicines incidents and produce reports summarising themes and actions required for various stakeholders.

To liaise with Quality and safety colleagues and clinical teams to support changes to clinical practice and policies/procedures following on from incidents, including the dissemination of learning.

To collaborate with the CityCare Clinical Governance leads and structure to ensure rational prescribing and best practice re protocols and guidelines relating to medicines in the local health community.


Audits To manage a programme of medicines audits across the organisation, including writing audit plans and reports and supporting action plans.
