PURPOSE OF JOB
Provide high level electronic and electrical engineering support to the Build and Test Department. This will involve specifying, designing, building, commissioning, maintaining, fault finding, repairing and calibrating instrumentation and control systems.
DUTIES
- Support users of the engine and vehicle test facilities:
- Communicate directly with our internal and external customers to understand their needs and then implement appropriate solutions.
- Specify and design bespoke electrical/electronic instrumentation or control equipment from first principles. Build, install, commission and produce engineering documentation for this equipment.
- Install and set up instrumentation and control equipment in an efficient manner, based on a sound technical understanding of the equipment and its functionality.
- Maintain and repair instrumentation and control equipment. This will be achieved through following structured fault analysis techniques and by having a wide and high level understanding of electronics.
- Select and purchase new instrumentation and control equipment, based on a high level understanding of the technical and functional requirements.
- Calibrate sensors and other equipment.
- Liaise with and manage suppliers and contractors to ensure the best possible service is delivered to the company.
- Produce detailed plans, including costings, covering instrumentation and control changes / improvements / repairs.
- Produce reports and presentations for internal and external customers.
- Identify opportunities to improve the instrumentation and control services offered to the business.
- Support the upgrade of the instrumentation and control equipment within the test facilities.
- Provide technical mentorship to junior members of the team.
EDUCATION
A minimum of an engineering HND in electronics, control, instrumentation or any other relevant discipline is required.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Essential:
- Prolonged demonstrated experience working in a test facility environment, preferably automotive but other areas will be considered.
- Indepth knowledge of complex electrical and electronic instrumentation and electromechanical equipment.
- Good problem solving skills.
- Ability to work well under pressure to priority and time constraints.
- Ability to work in a varied role, working effectively on multiple tasks in parallel.
- Experience of undertaking and managing smallmedium scale projects.
- Selfmotivated, conscientious with the ability to communicate effectively and work either independently or as part of a team.
- Well organised, good planning skills with an eye for detail.
- Good knowledge of PC systems including how to specify, maintain, diagnose issues, repair and upgrade hardware.
- Ability to perform simple manual operations such as drilling and sawing, e.g. for electronic enclosure assembly / modification.
Advantageous:
- Knowledge and experience of large motors and drive systems.
- Knowledge and experience of control engineering principals, e.g.
- Able to write and debug programs in a minimum of one mainstream language such as Java, C, C++ or VB to a good level.
- Ability to design PCBs
- Experience with using CAD or layout packages, e.g. AutoCad Electrical or Visio.
- Knowledge and experience with different interface protocols, e.g. I2C, SPI, Serial, CAN, Flexray, etc.
- Experience with electronics simulation packages, e.g. PSPICE.
- Experience of working with microcontrollers.
- Experience of working with mains voltages.
- Experience with using PLCs.
- Experience with automotive test systems such as AVL Puma, CP Cadet, DSG DatAqPro.
