Description

OUR MISSION
The challenges humanity is facing aren't the stuff of dystopia, science fiction or textbooks. They're happening today - and they've never been more complex and interconnected.

Yet our higher education system is still structured in silos, leaving graduates ill-equipped to tackle the complexity that surrounds them.

The next generation is now demanding to learn in a different way. That's where the London Interdisciplinary School (LIS) comes in.

LIS is a startup university that equips students with an interdisciplinary toolkit to tackle the complex, real-world problems of the 21st century.

With a world-class faculty, three exceptional founding cohorts and close partnerships with global organisations, such as McKinsey, innocent drinks, PwC and the Cabinet Office, LIS is building a new type of education for those who want to shape the world, not just fit in.

We are the first new UK education institution for 50 years to have full degree-awarding power from inception, and offer undergraduate, masters, as well as professional development programmes that take a ground-breaking interdisciplinary approach to education.

We are now in the third year of operations since the launch of our BASc in 2021. The first cohort of masters' students graduated in December 2023.

The successful applicant for this post would therefore be joining us at an exciting time of development, growth, and consolidation.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for an Assistant / Associate Professor with expertise in a social sciences discipline, where some interdisciplinary experience would be desirable, for example in behavioural science, public health, or a similarly interdisciplinary field.

In this role, you will contribute to our research and teaching portfolio, thanks to your experience investigating and engaging with complex, real-world problems in areas such as mental health, public health interventions, epidemiology, or similar.

We are looking for someone who can deliver engaging and innovative teaching in social science research methods such as:

  • content analysis
- thematic analysis
- narrative analysis
- participant observation
- interviews
- focus groups
- surveys

Some experience with quantitative methods would be desirable, for example in:

  • experimental design / hypothesis testing
- modelling
- network analysis
- data analysis

We seek entrepreneurial academics, in the widest sense, with the ambition to create impactful learning and research experiences for students and the wider LIS community.

Salaries are aligned with the wider Higher Education sector and may range from approximately £40,000 to £60,000, depending on experience.

Additional Information
We are looking for a successful applicant to join our team from September 1st, 2024 at the latest. The role is for a permanent contract.

The role may have a soft onboarding process and the involvement of successful applicants immediately on a smaller fractionality or another basis (e.g., consultancy).

We are happy to consider some flexible working arrangements.

Essential

  • Experience teaching and researching in an area characterised by the complex, realworld problems that lend themselves to interdisciplinary approaches
  • Experience using and teaching qualitative methods such as those listed above

  • Ability to work effectively as part of faculty and wider teams and to participate in wider LIS activities including pastoral support, admissions and recruitment

Desirable

  • Experience using and teaching quantitative methods such as those listed above
