Joining ScottishPower as a technical craftsman trainee you will be responsible for supporting the integrity of the distribution and protection system.

You will be the nominated person in charge ensuring all site work is carried out in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with company policy and safety rules.

You will deliver planned maintenance, investment and fault repair works as well as undertake:

  • Programmed, post fault and fault switching on distribution networks
  • Installation, commissioning and fault rectification of battery systems
  • Plant and protection maintenance
  • Protection commissioning and implementation, reactive and post fault switching and maintenance with operational engineers
  • Additionally, further develop appropriate skills for the distribution network, optimise and improve time restoration of supplies and provide best in class customer delivery.

What you'll be doing


You will manage the development of assigned trainees including apprentices, skills seekers, and adult craft trainees and contribute to the team goals by providing support, advice, encouragement and clear direction and coaching.


Carry out site and operational risk assessments on your team and associated contractors, deliver excellent customer feedback to all aspects of your operation and actively promote and strive to deliver high levels of customer service.

A crucial aspect will be to capture feedback and issues from operational safety and compliance audits and address any non-conformances.


Proactively working towards a zero-accident culture and have an awareness of and compliance with Company Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.


What you'll bring


You will be educated to HNC/HND level or equivalent and have a trade certification, as well as a full valid driving licence.

Full training and support will be provided on joining.

Having a knowledge of electrical networks, protection & battery systems, inter-trip systems and ancillary equipment and authorised to switch on the electrical network is beneficial.


A knowledge of distribution protection systems and control and restoration processes and procedures and if authorised and trained, can undertake 'live working' in accordance to live working manual.


  • Standby duties will be required as when necessary.
